The Matt Kenseth fan club would be very happy with how the start of 2008's second half went. Kenseth led a combined 115 laps and went back to back to win at New Hampshire and Pocono. Indianapolis would see Jeff Gordon dominate, leading the most laps (tied with Carl Edwards), but a fuel gamble by David Stremme allowed him to take home his first Sprint Cup win in an upset. Watkins Glen would continue to have fresh faces in the spotlight as AJ Allmendinger scored a career best 7th. Robby Gordon nearly stole the race, leading with 6 to go, but an accident involving Casey Atwood and Ward Burton stacked the field up. This allowed Tony Stewart to take the lead and hold on to win, as Gordon finished 6th following a tire rub on the last lap. Jimmie Johnson would take home Michigan, while Adam Petty won at Richmond to get his 4th win of 2008 (outscoring his entire career total to that point with 3 from 2002-2007). Joe Gibbs would go back to back as Denny Hamlin picked up his second win of 2008 at California. With 1 race left, the top 11 were clinched in points, while Casey Atwood at 12th held a 39 point lead over Brian Vickers and 50 point lead over Ryan Newman for the last spot. Kyle Busch would win at Richmond, while a 4th place run by Atwood locked him into the chase. Dale Earnhardt Jr would win the regular season championship by 196 points over Adam Petty, while Jeff Gordon, Carl Edwards, and Jimmie Johnson rounded out the top 5. The other chase drivers would include Kyle Busch, Matt Kenseth, Tony Stewart, Kurt Busch, Jeff Burton, Casey Atwood, and Denny Hamlin.
Defending champ Jimmie Johnson made a big statement to start the chase with back-to-back victories at New Hampshire and Dover. Denny Hamlin had the fastest car, leading 68 of 151 laps at Talladega. Jeremy Mayfield would lead one lap, though, and that would be the last lap as he made a pass on Hamlin to secure his first win since October of 2005, ending a nearly 3 year winless streak. Roush Racing would see a bad start to Kansas as chase driver Matt Kenseth blew an engine while in the lead and finished 35th. However, rookie David Ragan would put the #16 Ford in victory lane for his first ever Sprint Cup win as Jimmie Johnson expanded his points lead over Dale Jr and Adam Petty with a 3rd place run. Casey Atwood, who had been struggling and in 11th place in the Chase, shocked many with back-to-back wins at Charlotte and Marinsville to put him 3rd in the points standings. With just four races left, Atwood went from out of the picture to championship hopeful. However, a mediocre 26th run at Atlanta dropped him to 5th. With three races left, Jimmie Johnson was closing in on a second title in a row with a 130 point lead over Dale Jr and 253 point lead over Jeff Burton, with all others mathematically eliminated. A win at Texas virtually clinched the title for Jimmie Johnson, his second in a row. Kasey Kahne, who had just announced the day before that he would be headed to Evernham Motorsports in 2009, surprised many with a clean victory at Phoenix, while a second place run by Dale Jr put him 125 points behind the 48 Lowes Chevy (meaning Jr would need to finish 37 spots ahead of Johnson, a highly unlikely scenario) . Jimmie Johnson would dominate the field at Homestead to score his 6th win on the season, a perfect way to cap off his second championship. Dale Jr would finish 2nd in points 155 back, Jeff Gordon would finish 3rd, Casey Atwood would score 4th, and Matt Kenseth would round out the top five. Adam Petty, who had been in the top three in standings most the season, finished a rather disappointing 8th (although, this was still his best career points finish).

2009 Silly Season
Kasey Kahne and rookie Patrick Carpentier head aboard Evernham Motorsports for 2009, with Kasey Kahne piloting the 9 car with new sponsorship from McDonald's, and Carpentier piloting the 29 (renumbered from 91) with Valvoline coming over from MB2 Motorsports' 10 car. Jamie McMurray gets new sponsorship from Waste Management for 28 races on the year, but with the economy in a downtown MB2 Motorsports are struggling to find sponsorship for the rest of the races.
Bobby Labonte joins the brand new Stewart-Haas Racing team to pilot the #04 Haas CNC Chevy in a two year contract.
Replacing Kasey Kahne at Robert Yates Racing in the 38 Ford is Blaise Alexander. Robert Yates was reportedly impressed by Alexander, who finished 2nd in the Daytona 500 this season in the Wood Brothers 21 ride and scored 3 top 10's. At 29 years old, Alexander still has a long future ahead of him in the Cup series if he can make the most of this opportunity.
Andy Houston takes over the Furniture Row #78 Chevy. Since winning the 2003 Daytona 500, the journeyman has driven for five different teams (#43 Petty, #88 Yates, #83 Red Bull, #70 Haas, and now the #78 Furniture Row team).
Joey Logano will attempt 7 races in the #4 Morgan-McClure Toyota, with Brad Coleman attempting the road courses and Kenny Irwin piloting the car for the other rides. Irwin has confirmed that 2009 will be his last season in the Sprint Cup series and likely NASCAR as a whole, as the 38 year old wants to return to USAC starting in 2010. The 1998 Sprint Cup rookie of the year, Irwin scored two Sprint Cup wins, and a highest points finish of 17th (2005).
After competing in just one race since leaving the 01 car in 2004, Jerry Nadeau has a full time ride in 2009 driving for the Front Row Motorsports #34 Ford in a one year deal.
Paul Menard heads to a third Michael Waltrip Racing team, piloting the #56 Menards Toyota in a three year deal. The sponsorship money will definitely help the startup MWR team afford to grow in the future.
Mike Wallace will make a ROTY bid in the Wood Brothers 21 car in 2009.
JJ Yeley takes over the 20 Home Depot Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing in a pretty predictable move following the departure of Tony Stewart.

[OT] A local’s perspective on why Miami GP could and should happen, and no that’s not the track, and we’ll know more tomorrow.

This Forbes article sums up a my main points, it was posted a few hours after this post.
Apologies for the really long post but if you’re interested in more details on the topic like I am, it may be worthwhile. I will state many facts but also give my opinion on why it could and should happen in Miami. Most articles I’ve read about it keep things generally brief, don’t go into much detail, and mention nothing that’s particularly new to me.
Some are coming out today stating some of what I’m saying but I’ll give a bit of opinion as a F1 fan, as a naturalized citizen from South America and Miami resident for 15 years and counting (the typical South Florida sports fan), and as someone who has attended a Grand Prix (Hungaroring last year, first and only).
Since news broke about a possible Miami race I’ve been nonstop checking news, feeds, anything for updates. I live in downtown about 5 blocks from the AAA (Miami Heat arena). I really hope this happens, a Grand Prix in my backyard, literally, for the next 10 years!
People here will appreciate this. Miami is an international city. Residents are from all over South and Central America, the Caribbean, and a rise in Europeans in recent years. We have a very unique demographic to the rest of the country. Which might explain why Americans say Miami has “bad sport fans” and we don’t support our NFL, NBA, MLB, and NHL teams, since we never fill our stadiums, and many saying we’re undeserving of this Grand Prix.
Some of it speaks truth, but also half our residents don’t know or don’t care about the teams or the sport because we’re a melting pot. Add the luxury of having plenty more options to choose from when it comes to enjoying leisure time, compared with places like Cleveland, Indianapolis, or Pittsburgh (not to offend anyone, could be any city just trying to prove a point). But Miami is still a relatively small city (not metro area), not even close in size or population to New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, who rank top 3 in population. In fact, and I was stunned when I learned this, Miami ranks 44th in population, just behind...Omaha. Yes, Omaha. The one in Nebraska.
But we are sport and sporting events fans. You give us el clásico (Real Madrid vs Barcelona) and we sell out 66,00 tickets. Locals were outraged at the resale prices, but a good amount of the sales and resales were from Central America and many other places, not from the US.
Think of this as the “Grand Prix of the Americas.” I feel like this is a race more for South Americans than US Americans, but purposely located in Miami for a variety of reasons. One being safety; I think we all want to avoid incidents like we saw in Brazil last year. Another is that a Miami GP still very accessible for South and Central Americans, and while still appealing to the European market more than a possible South American GP, or the Mexican GP, or COTA GP. It makes a lot of sense from a business sense.
Moving on to the track now. Look I may be wrong, I’m no engineering/circuit safety expert, but as soon as I saw that sleazy looking leaked track with that elevated bridge over the water, I thought no way. Impossible. I just went to a GP and know this area very very well. So many logistical hurdles with that design. Impossible. Unless Liberty has a few tricks up their sleeve I don’t see it happening.
So Ken Russell, the guy that tweeted the picture, is one of the five Miami City Commissioners. Specifically in charge of downtown and surrounding neighborhoods district, including Port Miami, ideally where the race would be. Also MY district.
But he is NOT one of the three that have sponsored the resolution (bill/legislation) that brings a downtown October race for the next 10 years. They are Willy Gort, Frank Carollo, and Manolo Reyes. City Mayor Francis Suarez also sponsored the resolution.
Now don’t you think they’d know more on this matter since they’ve probably been involved in some form of communication with F1, considering their names are written on the piece of legislation. And they haven’t “leaked” anything.
Did any media outlet consult Russell if he even spoke with F1, Liberty, or anyone involved in the talks and if this track is even logistically possible. Some well known news sources were reporting that this “could be the new Miami GP,” and everything snowballed; next thing you know Lewis is already shitting on our non existent track, which I’m almost certain is not the track. But hey, that’ll happen in today’s media age.
On to the meeting. Miami city commission will meet with F1 tomorrow, Thursday May 10th, at 9:00 am Eastern time.
Though it varies around the US, to give you the basics, in this city-commission government, this would need 4/5 approval of the commissioners, and then mayor signs it into law. We know we have 3/4 votes already and the mayor also on board. This passes with no drama and then city manager will have until July to negotiate terms.
So either this Russell, made the track himself, not knowing the logistics of an F1 circuit, and posted it to social media with the good intentions of wanting constituents’ feedback in welcoming such an event regardless of the impact on their lives.
Or it could’ve been a move to bring negative attention in every way. But that’s unlikely. He could be genuinely concerned for his district and wants their input before voting on the issue. Traffic here is one of the worst in the US right now, and non stop developments and construction aren’t making it better.
Keep in mind this area already hosts many events year round with plenty of street closures, with the two biggest being Art Basel Week (Nov/Dec) and Ultra Music Week (MaApr). There are main events and all sorts of smaller events all over Miami these weeks.
I’m not gonna say it’s been “designed” for it, but Miami has “conditioned” itself to handle a massive influx of tourists and host large events. And it’s Miami, it’s a tourist destination.
Probably half of the buildings in downtown and south beach are hotels, and the other half are residential with half the units on Airbnb. Half of the buildings under construction are hotels, and the other half of buildings under construction will be residences that will end up with half the units on Airbnb.
But many of the major projects in the works, planned, or just opened include infrastructural projects and works to better accommodate more crowds in the near future. New, privately owned hi speed electric rail/stations/terminals, by Brightline, really the first of its kind in Miami. All kinds of updates and expansions to PortMiami, including new terminals by Norwegian, and Royal Caribbean. They put $250 million for a new landmark terminal opening this October, dubbed the “Crown of Miami.”
After witnessing a F1 GP, I can honestly say this could undoubtedly be the biggest event/week the city will have ever hosted. I don’t think most people realize the magnitude of what an F1 weekend is like (practice, qualy, race for F1 and possibly F2, Porsche race, etc.) and the impact it would have on the local economy.
Just thinking of street closures would be madness. Melbourne begins work some 2 months before the race and can take at least a month removing everything after. In Singapore, preparation and closures start 3-4 months before race.
When given a chance to host a global event of this scale, regardless of the impact on local traffic, is just too good a chance to pass on. The positives far outweigh the negatives. And traffic wouldn’t be madness if done efficiently, with minimal street closures, and done with that progressive-green-urban-multi-purpose-public-space mentality. Which they could be doing.
Resolution says the city will cooperate with the county, the port, and dept of transportation and other entities as needed. There are still large pockets of public or undeveloped space/land around downtown. It’s not crazy to think some changes or additions will be done to roads and spaces to accommodate an F1 street circuit for the next 10 years bringing massive economic benefits to the city.
But it does mean the city would have to spend some millions, and that falls on the taxpayers. Miami residents are already stuck paying for a billion dollar baseball stadium we did not want. We were duped and promised economic benefits but that stadium is empty for the 81 baseball games it hosts every season. That’s another long story but it’s the perfect example with what’s wrong with the American sports model.
Which isn’t all that different than hosting GPs. They can be costly on the local government and there’s no direct way to point out how much the city actually benefits. Melbourne loses tens of millions every year hosting the race, Texas spent some $250 million on COTA.
But remember, those are Bernie deals. Deals that surely give F1 the better end of the bargain. Liberty clearly wants to go another direction. A more humble approach? Could this pave the way for future circuit negotiations?
Here’s where I think things get juicy. The Mayor of Miami has stated that about 99% of the funding to host the race will come from outside investors, and it would only cost the city around $500,000. Now that might be too friendly of a number but I don’t think it’s ridiculous that most of the money would come from outside investors.
This is a much better deal for residents than....I don’t know, a billion dollar baseball stadium?Bringing such an iconic sporting event would benefit the city and there’s no reason not receive the support from the two other City Commissioners, Ken Russell and Keon Hardemon.
Also good for the city is FIA mandate F1 circuits to have a Grade 1 license. I’m sure our streets aren’t F1 ready. Parts of Melbourne and Baku were repaved prior to the inaugural race, and certain areas were modified to accommodate the circuit. Some areas here actually, desperately need repaving and repair.
Then there’s Stephen Ross. Billionaire and owner of Miami Dolphins, who actually bid $8 billion on F1 a few years ago. It may not have worked out then, but it seems he is still involved definitely has interest in bringing a race here. Local papers have been mentioning Ross and his expressed support for the race the last few weeks. Last week statements from F1 themselves, are very brief and very vague yet mention an awful lot of Ross.
https://www.formula1.com/en/latest/headlines/2018/5/formula-1---miami-grand-prix-proposal---statement.html
It’s likely because he runs RSE Ventures, an investment and business incubation company, with Matt Higgins, the man responsible for bringing el clásico and the International Champions Cup and other events to US and South Florida, and rumors are they’re the ones involved in bringing the race to Miami. They also relocated the Miami Open tennis tournament to a new tennis facility near Dolphins stadium next year. These dudes are no joke, they walk the walk.
I’m sure the cruise industry is heavily invested as well. Royal Caribbean is based in Miami. Miami Heat owner Micky Arison also owns Carnival cruises. I’d imagine they would want the race as well. Lock in increased profits for the next decade.
Probably unrelated but Ferrari just opened an official dealer a few weeks ago, Aston Martin is building ultra luxury residences all in downtown. There are just so many things pointing in the right direction.
This would be a convenient GP in terms of logistics. Miami International Airport is 20 minutes from downtown. One of the largest ports in the country tucked next to the track would facilitate visitors on cruises and teams shipping in tons of equipment (imagine Monte Carlo having a shipping and passenger port adjacent to the circuit). That’s where I think the cost of hosting the GP is greatly reduced. Now the idea of outside investors covering most of the costs doesn’t seem that crazy.
The circuit and port would be the geographical center of the weekend, with nothing but hotels, restaurants, and the entire hospitality and tourism industry, the engine that drives south Florida, surrounding it in every direction.
There is too much money to be made by everyone and everyone wins in the process. Investors, the city and its residents, the fans making short or long trips being accessible destination city.
If the terms are what they say they’ll be, and most funding will be from investors, they are the ones who face the greatest risk here, so let ‘em gamble and give us this Grand Prix!

Indianapolis Mini Marathon - Sometimes it IS your day.

Race information

Goals

Goal Description Completed?
A No Injuries Yes
B 1:40 Yes
C 1:41:32 (new PR) Yes

Training

Well, training was really just a carry over from Marathon Training. I ran a marathon 6 days earlier (race report), so I didn't do anything specific for this half. In fact, I skipped my only planned run for the week. I planned a shakeout run on Thursday, but I woke up and still had one or two minor complainers in my left foot from the marathon, so I decided there was no need to run with a foot that wasn't completely happy.

Expo

Meb was running this race as a public appearance and promotional event. He was the honorary starter, and then he ran the race from the back of the pack. He did an autograph session at the expo, and I had to stand in line for 90 minutes, but I got to meet him and get a quick picture and autograph.

Race strategy

My primary goal for this half was to listen to my body and not hurt myself. This is not the first time I've done big events on a short turn around, and they can take a toll on the body. If my legs weren't there, I was 100% going to take it easy and just have fun...if anything really started to hurt, I would walk or DNF...no injuries allowed. That being said, I tend to recover quickly, so if my legs felt good, I planned to go for a PR and maybe try to crack 1:40, which would be a big PR.

Pre-race

I was surprisingly calm pre-race. I carpooled up with a couple friends, and met some others once we got up there, and we hung out and warmed up as it got closer to race time. Fortunately, there was space near the corral entrance that wasn't too crowded so I got in a normal warm up. This race is usually so crowded that it can be hard to warm up like I want to, so that was a nice surprise. I felt pretty good overall, and decided to start out on PR pace and see where my legs took me.

Miles [1] to [4]

7:45, 7:22, 7:27, 7:33
I've run this race many times, and I break it into three parts in my head. The first part is getting to the town of Speedway. The first mile had some traffic to deal with, and I was doing my best to find space, but not get really frustrated and not burn a ton of energy darting around people. So, split was a bit slow, but I wasn't worked up about it. Once I hit mile 1 and made the first turn by the zoo, it had thinned out enough to not be a problem anymore. Miles 2-4 were in a pretty good groove. I felt warmed up and wasn't too crowded anymore, so I just let my legs go and cruised.

Miles [5] to [8]

7:39, 7:47, 7:55, 7:39
The second section of the course is running on the Indianapolis motor speedway. The only hill on the whole course is getting into the speedway. You run underneath the track itself in a pedestrian walkway tunnel, so it doesn't last long, but there's a fairly steep downhill followed by a fairly steep uphill. Running on the speedway is really the highlight of this course. As I was entering the track, I saw the lead woman exiting the track, so she was 2.5 miles ahead of me at that point. It was fun to see the pack of bicycles leading her. As I started running my loop, my overall pace was ahead for a PR, but I was feeling more tired than I wanted to. So I decided to take it down a half a notch and see if I could recover a little bit. I actually slowed down more than I intended to, but I did feel a bit better after a couple miles. I told myself at that point to get back on pace and see if I had it in me to hold. Also I told myself that if I really want this 1:40 time, it's going to hurt, and I either need to embrace that or let it go...I decided to embrace.

Miles [9] to [13.1]

7:37, 7:36, 7:23, 7:25, 7:19, .1 at 6:31 pace
The final section of the course is leaving the speedway and getting back downtown. I was working hard at this point, but not out of bounds...I thought I could hold. I caught and passed two friends of mine shortly after leaving the racetrack. They gave me some quick words of encouragement, and I kept rolling along. I realized somewhere in mile 10 that I was on the cusp of 1:40, so I could either rely on a finishing sprint to bring me under, or I could ratchet the pace up and push for a longer stretch. I felt like I had another gear, so I went for it for the last couple miles. These last couple miles hurt, but it was a good hurt, and it was a level where I wasn't sure I could hold on, but I decided the gamble was worth it. The final left hand turn comes with about 1 mile to go, and it's over a bridge, so there is a small but noticeable uphill. That hill was where my legs screamed the most, but I decided I wasn't listening, I was running. I also had to stop looking at my watch because twice I thought 3-4 minutes must have passed since I last checked...and both times it was only 1 minute. So with about 3/4 of a mile left I just stopped looking...it didn't matter anyway, I could either hold this pace or not...the watch wasn't going to help. The finish line came into view, and I gave it what I had for a finishing sprint, which wasn't much at all, and then I was done...1:39:33. I could not have been happier.
Strava Link

Post-race

I got out of the way in the finisher's chute and turned around to wait for my friends. I knew they wouldn't be far behind, and they were there in a couple minutes. So, we went through and got all the free food, got our checked bags and found a semi-private place behind a dumpster to take turns changing into dry clothes. Then we relaxed a bit and got to see two friends of ours finish their first HM, so that was fun as well. Lastly, obviously Meb was doing this as a fun run and public appearance and such, but I did just beat his time...so I can now say I raced with and beat an Olympian :)

What's next?

In the short to medium term is just going to be recovery and working back up to normal training. Back to back races takes a toll on the body, so I'm going to ease back in over the next 4-6 weeks. Longer term, I'm going to work on increasing my weekly mileage to where 50mpw is normal. Also, I need to truly decide if I'm taking the leap and doing my first ultra this Fall or not...I'm thinking of trying a 50 mile race to check it off the bucket list.

Also, a guy wanted to start a real Jurassic Park.
Is that going to be on the next episode? Haha. Yes. We're partnering with Icy Mike.
Has there ever been a situation where you weren't able to help someone? Or something went wrong in the process? We met a old man who wanted to reconnect with his long lost love, a woman named Joyce Hook, they lost touch in their 20s. We searched for 2 years but couldn't find any trace of her. - Duncan
ACTIVATE REDDIT SEARCH POWERS. Sadly, Bob, the elderly man who searched for her, has since past. He never gave up though. If you find the one, #takethechance -jonnie.
What's your favorite thing you have done so far that has helped someone? I'd say it's different for all of us. For me (jonnie) it was helping Lucas in DC who wanted to get a home for his dad, who became homeless after a fractious divorce. He's a good kid.
For me, it's the first person we ever helped in Kelowna, BC. we helped a guy that used to be homeless get a truck for his new business. i still talk to him on fb 7 yrs later. he's in the first vid we ever made: Link to bit.ly -ben.
I've been a huge fan of you guys since Season 1 and you guys inspired me to start up a fundraiser to purchase Bio-fuel conversion systems for a School/Orphanage in Tanzania, Africa. I've always wondered what inspired you guys to actually break the mold and set off for the adventure? This is so cool. Thank you for asking. It inspires me to hear that.
What motivated me to set off when we started in 2006 was a) I wanted to work with my brother b) I couldn't figure out why more people our age weren't protesting and c) I was unhappy with my life. It felt like we had all these problems in the world that weren't being addressed. Things like global warming that were too complex for any single leader to conquer. I thought to myself, how do I help? At the time my brother had lost one of his best friends to a drowning accident in British Columbia and it made me think a lot about death. I realized that mortality is a (maybe, the) most powerful motivator for our species. Then I thought, I wonder what people want to do before they die? Then, what do I want to do before I die? And I decided from there that I wanted to ask people and to learn what they had to say. I thought the soberness of it might help the conversation. It helps put all the bullshit to rest. That's kinda also why we called this The Buried Life. It felt like we get buried by day-to-day stuff that makes us forget what's truly important in life.
Then we decided to go after our list of 100 things (Link to www.facebook.com and to help a stranger each time we got one done. The name specifically I should add is courtesy of an 1852 poem called The Buried Life by Matthew Arnold. -jonnie.
Torri, your story is incredible, and you obviously have great people in your life. What has been the most positive or unexpected change in your life since receiving your new arm? Becoming more confident in myself, i feel like i can do anything now -Torri.
What is the list item that will be the hardest to cross off? The one you're scared may never happen? Grow a moustache.
#95: Play Basketball with the President. That was tough. #100 Go To Space will be hard too, but we've been having some conversations with people about it.
The idea of never crossing off #78: Fall in Love used to scare me, but less so as I get older. I'm beginning to realize that love is all around you, you just need to be open to it. I hope that doesn't come off too cheesy. -jonnie.
Grow a moustache.
Talk to Hanger Clinic. Bionic Moustache. That's my favorite comment. -ben.
If the video gets to 2 million views Hanger Clinics will donate a bionic moustache to Torri. Tor, I'm sorry. -jp.
What was the craziest/ most daring thing that you guys have done? Probably streak a field. We got arrested but it was fun while it lasted. Thanks. - Dp.
Def streak: Link to vimeo.com
Hey guys! I remember watching one of your shows when you tried to make a million dollars. If you could redo that episode, what would you do differently? Probably taken our time with it. Gambling was a quick chance to make 1Million but if we really wanted to make it, it would have been better to slowly build. Maybe use the money made on investing and keep slowly building. Thanks. - Duncan.
Just don't go to the horse tracks. those horses are stupid. -ben.
Hey guys, have you added anything to the list since you made it? Yes we add and remove things. The list changes and evolves with us. We really want to lower the suicide rate in North America, so we added that to our list last year. - Duncan
Did you ever end up actually getting to play basketball with Obama? Yes, we were actually surprised on the white house courts by Obama last year. He's got a good 3.
Here's a pic: Link to bit.ly
When do you guys expect to have your bucket list complete? Never! No.. people ask us all the time, "What are you going to do when you finish your list of 100 things to do before you die?" Die, we tell them. Die! -jonnie.
THE BURIED LIFE. There's a name i haven't heard in a long time. Glad to see you're still at it with a vengeance. I'm in a band that absolutely loves doing charity work and helping others. Any chance you guys need a theme song? Cheers. send tracks to [email protected] we're making a lot of different stuff right now and would love to check it out. -ben.
We would love to donate one to your cause. We can't offer much other than our music, but it's yours if you want it. That'd be great, we're working on a lot of stuff and could use some music. send us an email at [email protected] -ben.
What is your advice to those who are suffering with depression? Hey johnny. first remember that depression doesn't last forever and everyone goes through things like this, so you're not alone. one thing that may help is to try to do little things that make you happy, take small steps. when i was feeling depressed after high school, even though it was hard, i tried to stay active, force myself to hang out with people that i loved and made me smile, eat things that i liked, etc. sometimes it's good to do things that push u out of your comfort zone, even if you don't feel like it because it brings you out of your head. important thing, as i said before, is to remember that you're not along. a lot of people struggle with this, and you will get through it. a great site to check out is To Write Love On Her Arms: Link to twloha.com stay with it mate.
Do you expect to ever have a TV show again? We hope to have a show again but only if it makes sense. we were executive producers of our last show and were involved in every aspect of making it so it's important that we have a say in what it looks like. regardless, we'll still be putting out videos like Torri's online and helping people do things they want to do before they die. The Buried Life started in 2006 as a documentary project, long before the tv show, and we're just going to keep doing it. - Ben.
Are there any things you were unable to air that you would like to tell us about? Yeah we played basketball with Obama, finally, on the white house courts, we weren't allowed to film but we snuck a camera in anyways. We now have footage but aren't allowed to air it. We will one day ;) - Duncan.
Big fan! Can't wait to see more of you guys! How did you feel after loosing so much money as the casino? Thanks, mik. Like idiots.. haha. In the end though the casino did donate a good portion of it to charity. (Backstory: we lost 250k on one roulette spin while attempting #71: Make a Million Dollars. It's been called 'the biggest roulette spin in vegas history')
P.s. not sure what music you're into, but this flight facilities decades mix is really good: Link to soundcloud.com
Not good! Although we did get the record for the single biggest roulette spin in Vegas history which was nice. - Duncan.
I feel good about it, it was a rip!! -ben.
You guys are honestly the best. What inspired you to start The Buried Life? Also, what's your go-to happy song? We just had a desire for more from life, we were bored. Buried Life came from wanting to prove to ourselves and our friends that anything was possible. Thx for watching it! - Duncan.
Go to happy song: Link to www.youtube.com
Ben.
Did Jonnie ever kiss Ben's sister at the prom? So curious! Jonnie? - Duncan.
No. No make out. We're just friends. -jp.
Damn straight. -ben.
What's the most inspiring story that you guys have heard from someone you've met along your travels? We met a woman named Trudy who was just diagnosed w breast cancer and was told she had 6 months to live. when we asked if there was anything she wanted to do before she died, she said yes but not for her, she wanted to help kids born w cancer - cause she had had 52 great years of life. we linked up w a group of kids under 12 with different types of cancer and took them on a shopping spree. trudy was one of those woman who had awesome energy, lit up a room when she walked in. she was very cool. here's shot of the kids: Link to farm3.staticflickr.com
Ben.
This question is 4 TORRI BIDDLE: are u wearing 2 pairs of pants? yes or no? i must know, I MUST KNOW. Well no i am not sam -Torri
Ok thanks bring two pairs on saturday. Ok mate peace love applesauce.
I hate giraffes. They think they're all high and mighty with their long necks and such. Who the hell do they think they are?! What's your take on this issue? I hate them, takes them so long to swallow their pride.
If you weren't doing The Buried Life, what would each of you be doing now? Dave would be a stuntman, Jonnie would be doing political activism/filmmaking, Duncan would be hiking mountains and Ben would running a wee pie shop deep in the Himalayans named "Mountains of Joy"
Also what unusual advice would you have for a college student today? I know you guys decided to start your adventure around this time in your lives. Best advice would be if you have an idea or dream you want to go after. Don't think about it as a dream, think about it as project. Dreams have a way of staying dreams but projects get accomplished. And dont ever give up! Delaware and Arkansas are surprisingly beautiful. We toured the country in a big purple bus named Penelope which changed the way I saw places. I'll never forget the part from Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance where talks about how seeing cities from a motorcycle means seeing them without a frame around them. You're "in" the city, as opposed to being outside looking in. Being in that bus for years on end has been similar, for me, in a way because we would cruise with the windows open and be able to walk around in it as we drove. It would also attract the attention of the locals wherever we went. It's a 1968 GMC Diesel Pusher, the same model as in the movie Speed (except it can't go over 50miles/hour). I'm off on a tangent. The point is, Delaware and Arkansas took my breath away. They were just so quiet and beautiful and American. EDIT: you said cities. I love Berlin and Montreal. They are places that remind you that anything is possible. You can live in downtown Montreal for $400 a month. That changes the dynamics of a city. It means artists and political thinkers can survive on a basic wage and commit deeply to their craft. In a time when many student's ambitions are being extinguished by debt, it's these cities I think we can turn to for leadership and innovation. There are many cities I haven't visited though. On the debt issue, which came up in another thread, I met with Peter Ludlow, a professor at UCLA, last month and he said the reason college kids don't protest like they did in the 60s is because of student debt. They can't afford to. He said his students run around in fear of one misstep. The way the economy has changed has made it even harder to get a second shot if god forbid you fall off the wagon at any point. To make matters worse, student debt is the only debt in the country that you can't default on. So.. you're hooked. It's a shame. I don't know what the solution is but I do hope it changes.
Do you have any advice as to what I can do to make sure I live life to the fullest and help other people as much as possible? Yeah, we put a lot of time into writing this article for Tim Ferriss' blog, you should check it out: 6 Steps to Crossing Anything Off Your List: Link to bit.ly
What's the next big thing on the horizon for you guys? #100: Go to Space and #26: Tell a judge, "You want the truth, you can't handle the truth!"
To be honest, for me personally, my latest goal has been to direct the first feature length film with a 360 degree camera. I've been into this oculus rift stuff and have been working with a company called Centre Cam (Kickstarter Page: Link to www.kickstarter.com) It's a game changer. VR just opens whole new realms of possibility for story telling. -jonnie.
I am a very big fan! and I love everything you guys do. What was your favorite thing to crossed off your list? I think it's different for everyone but for me it was probably 'Streaking a Field'. My favourite help story was when we reunited a father with his son after 17 years. Thanks - Duncan
When was/is the deadline for submitting an entry for the #5thmember contest? We're picking them tomorrow, u can enter as many times as you want.
Finally made a reddit account just for this! You guys are great- can't wait to see more of your accomplishments. Right around the same time as your show began, my friend Matt and I had a similar list with similar goals of traveling the world and doing amazing stuff. At first we were pissed because you beat us to the punch, but after years of seeing your show, we're glad you guys made it and can inspire so many people to be great, ourselves included. What was your first official cross off, or first thing you put on your list? That's great. Thanks, tvafi. The first one we crossed off was #34: Be a Knight for a Day. We traded beer for a restaurant voucher for a suit of armor rental at a costume shop (it's the only way we could afford to do it). Then we told the press in our town to come see it and kick off our "tour" To our surprise/horror.. they showed up. The next day it was on the front page of the newspaper and that was the 2nd thing off our list. There's a story somewhere out there you can see. +1 point if you can find it. The newspaper was the Times Colonist in Victoria, BC Canada. -jonnie.
What inspired you guys to start looking for a 5th member in Italy? We partnered with Contiki Tours (who do travel trips for young people across the world). They said they would help us help fans cross off list items in Italy so we came up with @5thmember. You can still sign up: Link to s3.amazonaws.com
Where's Dave?! He's diving for giant pearls in Afghanistan.
No I heard he was air ballooning in Mongolia rehabilitating wingless camels. - DP
Hi Torri! Hows life? Also, would you rather fight 1 horse sized duck, or 100 duck sized horses? Hello and life is great -Torri.
And i would fight 100 duck sized horses lolz -Torri.
Me too! We could fight them together Tor. - Duncan.
I'll be fighting the duck's side guys, can't help you. sorry. -Ben
How did you guys find the courage to stray from "normal life" and follow your dreams? I'm searching for that same type of courage right now. It helped that we started it with our friends, it's always good to work with people you like. they pick you up when you're down. and honestly, we didn't think about it too much, we just took a road trip and starting crossing off list items and helping people and it grew from there. if you just start doing it, taking small steps, you'll figure it out. good luck and have fun. -ben.
If someone doesn't win the contest, can they still come and cross off something from their bucket list with you guys in Italy? Huge fan. Are you in Italy? Yeah come meet us why not. ; ) - Duncan.
Are you guys going to start touring Canada again? We love Canada, we go back a lot. Where are you from? - Duncan.
Waterloo. Awesome, looking forward to it! Love Waterloo, have friends at school out there. Whats up Canada!?
Yeah, if you guys could come to Edmonton soon, that'd be great... Duncan and I grew up in Edmonton. Butter Dome!
Not sure about @cwadden, but I'm from Victoria :) Do you head home often? Visiting with your moms this weekend? Jonnie and I were just back last weekend for our Mom's bday. We love Vic! - Duncan
Hey guys, can I get a shout-out to my sister? She is a huge fan of yours and is currently living her dream of traveling around Europe. Whats her name? Does she have twitter?
Her name is Kelsey--it's @KelseyHeath14 and I think she has like 10 tweets. I am so getting best sister of the year award for this. 12 tweets actually. We are friends now. - DP.
It looks like it is the same, but does it feel different to have a bionic arm to a normal arm? I don't really think so it might be heavier than a normal arm but it's not to bad- Torri.
What are you guys currently working on? We started a production company and have been creating new tv shows, living and working in Venice, CA. we're going to Italy tomorrow and bringing someone with us (Link to bit.ly) we're doing a lot of speaking at colleges, helping ppl and making vids like the one we made with Torri. we're working on #100: Go To Space. i'm working on my biceps, a little bit of tricep work, but mainly biceps. -ben.
Right now we're about to fly to Italy and are surprising someone who has a dream in Italy, bringing them with us.
We launched a production company recently and have been developing new concepts for television - some of them related to Buried Life, some of them new.
We speak at colleges and businesses, encouraging people to go after the things they want to do before they die and talk about our book.
Ride bikes around venice beach.
Still going after our list and helping others do the same.
Ben.
If this video gets 1 million views Hanger Clinics will donate another bionic arm to a deserving teenager: Link to www.youtube.com. Link to media.giphy.com
Would you guys be down to have a guest (like me) travel with you this summer and help out people in need? I love what you guys do and I would love to be on your team! Actually yeah we are doing a contest right now to take a #5thMember on the road with us. Come on down bit.ly/1ldV6ue.
Duncan, you planning on getting the new Smash Bros? If so, make your way back to Victoria and we'll have another match. (HSkey) Congrats on all your amazing success. HSkey, haha. Lets do it! Good to hear from you old boy! Hope things are great for you. - Duncan
I ordered a copy of your book when you said you were signing the preorders but when it showed up it wasn't signed. Who do I call crying to? Thank you so much, would love to meet.
Any good tips on how to travel in Europe for cheap? I'm from U.S. and have never been. Love the show and love telling people about your adventures! Yes come to Italy with us and Contiki Tours. We are bringing one person along to cross off list items. Link to s3.amazonaws.com
Any advice for asking t swift out? I've written songs about my exes so I guess I've got that going for me. Become a fake country music star.
How does the bionic arm feel like, Torri? At first it was really heavy because i was not use to the weight but now it's fine- Torri.
It can be amazing for hitting around. I suppose. Right? Haha yes-Torri.
For anyone who doesn't know it, the song is We Dont Eat. His latest album, Post Tropical, came out in January. I like Cavalier, Red Dust, and Gold. Adventure Club did a dubstep remix of We Don't Eat. All credit to @jaysalbert for the song choice. He helped edit it all together too.
If they made a movie about your life, who would play you (other than yourself)? Morgan Freeman. - Duncan.
Jonnie: harry potter duncan: james dean dave: anyone from a Sunny D commercial ben: amy adams
I love you guys so much, and I love what you do and how you're teaching people to live life to the fullest. But what about when you WANT to die? What are your tips for struggling with finding meaning to life? Emily, thank you for this. There's an article by Camus (a philosopher) who asks if suicide is the only truly serious philosophical problem. You can see the link below. I think the answer to your question is a deeply personal one for each person, but for me the answer may be that you cannot 'find' meaning in life, you have to make it. It is the process of discovering what makes you happy that makes you happy, even if your search begins with humble joys like laughing or enjoying a good meal. If the feelings that you're having disrupt your daily life and prevent you from ever feeling happy, I'd encourage you to check out the help of professionals. But that's up to you. We work with a group called TWLOHA.com.
Each of us have struggled with depression in our lives (and probably will in some capacity until we die) but it's the process of searching out joy that makes us happy. Starting a life-list can help :) Thanks for sharing. -jonnie.

P.s. duncan often says, "happiness in intelligent people is the rarest thing I know." You might just be exceptionally bright :)
Hi Torri. 6 weeks ago our daughter Isla was born with a shortened ulna and a severely under developed hand, but she is absolutely perfect in every way. Do you have any advice for us on how to be the parents she will need us to be? What my parents did for me that helped the most is that they didn't treat me differently than my brother and sister. Being raised that way it helped a lot, and just be positive! :) -Torri.
What is your favorite joke to tell? Knock knock...
Hey! I've been a huge fan of the entire concept! You guys inspried me to go to Burning Man this year! Have fun. burning man may be my favourite place on earth. -ben.
Do you guys think you'll ever come out to Arizona? we have some big mountains you can climb to check of your list (#51).. also Im a huge fan of your work and would love to meet you guy! hope your show comes back on Tv soon! Nothing better than a solid mountain climb. Also, great name FannyPackBen. Ben loves fanny packs.
Hey Torri, how easy/complicated is your bionic arm to use? I have a similar arm, but it looks like you've better reach. I've been looking into them but they seem odd to me. Proof, I guess: Link to m.imgur.com. Yeah for me its really not that hard to use with me not having a right hand before but it really depends on the person using each person has a different level of difficulty -Torri.
Hi guys, what do you like on your pizza? Jonnie- hawaiian Ben- veggie Duncan- pepperoni Dave- whatever the waitress recommends. Dave has put more thought into meals than he has into major life decisions. just the way he is.
What is the hardest thing you had to overcome for the list? I love the show and you've inspired me to do so much, I hope it comes back soon! #53 Make a TV Show was a doozie. We started TBL in our parents garage and it took 3 years to cross that one off.
Hey! Love you guys! How easy is it to just be in places you have no business in being there? I get it it's for a tv show, but still you have to be a little uncomfortable, right? Oh god yes. I had to sit in a bathroom stall for 3 hours after sneaking into the premiere of Transformers 2 to try and get Ben a date with Megan Fox (#59 on the list). I would say I was shitting my pants but that wouldn't be necessary. I had the stall.
Can I be the fifth man? Yes. Link to s3.amazonaws.com
Hey Tony here! I love what you guys do! Any advice for a man with a bucketlist on a budget? I'd love to do a lot of the things you guys have done! How did you guys get enough money to take all of these trips? Link to s3.amazonaws.com
How many bucket list items do you have left to cross off on your list of 100? Is there an updated list somewhere that shows which ones are left? We have crossed off around 84 things. Here's our list but it's not completely updated. Link to www.facebook.com
Hey Ben, we talked on the phone after your speech in Indianapolis. I couldnt attend because of the disaster in the Philippines and my line of work. You said "Talk to you soon." How long is soon?! How bout now? haaayyy - ben.
What was it like sitting in a cake for 6+ hours? It was hot and I had to piss.
Should I buy a moped? Yes, for sure. But be careful.
Any plans to do more episodes of the show with MTV? Proud of all you guys are doing... making Canada proud! Thanks. Yeah would always consider a comeback season!
How soon is now? NOW.
How many items have you guys managed to scratch off the list at the moment? You guys are incredible. Around 86.
