Lockdown 3.0 Things to do, plus help and support.

Disclaimer I want to thank everyone for the gilds, replies and suggestions. I just do not have time to reply to everyone, but I am reading everything. I am not sure how much bigger the thread can be, I already typed this but it vanished so I think I'm at the limit. I will try to keep updating, but I don't expect the thread to be up top for much longer and will likely vanish soon, so if you need anything save it.
Yes, it's hard, it sucks, it's depressing. It is something we all have to do if you want to see this virus go. Everyone knows the deal, too many think they're the exception but no one is. However, staying home is hard so maybe I can help at least one or two people with some incentives. I'll try to give links to some things that can help cure the boredom, and some support if you need it.
Most of this might be obvious to some, some might not even have internet and of course, money is a big issue, so I'll try to give some suggestions:
For streaming and on demand things such as Netflix et al, don't forget you can subscribe for free for your first month. This goes for most things in the list. If you are worried about putting in your payment details and forgetting to cancel a month later, don't worry! You can sign up and immediately cancel and you still get your free month!
For people who don't have a smart TV, you can buy a cheap Amazon Fire TV stick or a Roku box. The Fire stick can go as low as £20 often for 1080p. It will drop to £30 for 4k.
I picked up a 4k Roku device for £18 on Amazon once. It's fast and snappy. currently it's going for £33 for the 4k version. Having both, there is little difference between the devices. NowTV also do their own roku powered device.
Subscription based streaming sites that all offer 2-4 weeks free for first timers
  • Netflix *According to comments the second month is free.
  • Amazon Prime You can either get Amazon video on its own, or take prime with other benefits. I strongly urge those who use Amazon for buying off their store front to use [https://smile.amazon.co.uk/] as there is literally no difference except everything you buy amazon donates to a charity of your choice.
  • Now TV (I believe it's 7 days)
  • Disney+
  • Britbox
  • Amazon channels. I believe you can get all these individually but Amazon offers them as channels bound to your prime account, and they are again either free for a couple weeks (again, take them, cancel instantly) or very cheap. I recently subscribed to Starzplay for £1 for 3 months. It has some good shows on it like Fringe, doom patrol. It also has channels like Curiosity stream and shudder
If you have not subscribed to the any of the above, you can get a few months of free TV by signing up and cancelling instantly. I suggest waiting at least 5 minutes just to let it go through the system.
Some tips for Now TV. IF you already have a subscription, I've noticed you can get it cheaper by cancelling. When you cancel they will beg you to stay. Select "I can not afford it this month" and they should beg again, telling you what shows they have. If you say you still want to cancel, they'll beg one last time and offer you the subscription for cheaper. This won't work every month, but I've noticed they'll always offer it the first time, then again after a couple months. If you're subscribed to both films and entertainment do the most expensive one as it may not work both times (but it might!). You can also pick up passes from storefronts a lot cheaper sometimes, before I could pick one up on Amazon for £3 but, they seem to have cracked down on it. If you shop around (or if anyone knows of a legitimate store please let me know) you might be able to pick it up cheaper. Lastly, check their website and under your account they should have an "offers for you" section.
Completely free TV
If you do have a smart TV and/or device, there are some good free streaming apps. One I really love is called PlutoTV. I know this is on both Roku and the fire stick, as well as Ps4/Ps5 and xbox.
Pluto offers a bunch of live channels and now an on demand section, all for free. It has adverts but they are actually short (shorter than regular TV and fewer of them). Some of the channels are just streaming certain shows like Mythbusters 24/7 or Dog the bounty hunter, but it has a lot of old movie channels as well as 24/7 kickboxing and MMA. It also has a 24/7 poker channel I quite like.
Another one I like is Rakuten Viki however, I haven't watched it for a while as my fire stick is only 1080p and I have too many other devices attached. I believe it is on Roku but you have to jump through some hoops and have an account. The last I checked on the fire stick you did not. Viki offers a metric ton of Asian shows, mainly from Japan and South Korea but it does have chinese, Malaysian etc. It has subtitles. Some Japanese shows are hysterical, albeit weird.
Roku also do their own channels with free shows if you own a device.
For those who don't have a smart TV or a Streaming device, you can set up your own computer as a dedicated streaming device with Plex. It's been a while since I used it but I believe it now also offers free movies and TV.
Anime
If you are into Anime there is
The first 2 are free to watch, or offer premium without ads which you can have a trial with. Crunchyroll is the better of the two with more original choice for Japanese voice and subs, while Funimation has more Dubs. I don't believe HiDive is free to watch but you do get a 2 week trial. These are more exclusives than the previous two.
PC Centric software
If you are a gamer or like Audiobooks or anything that uses computers for things like music making, programming or graphic design
Humble Bundle offers, as per the name, bundles. A long running site that got bought out by IGN. It offers both single items and bundles you can buy individually/as a pack while also offering a separate monthly subscription for around £8-9. The subscription gives you 12 games on average per month. That's the simplest explanation but it changes somewhat as sometimes you get to pick 10 out of 14 games, or get all 12.
Humble bundle offers more than just games though. Every Tuesday they bring a new bundle of games, while Thursday (I "think) a new bundle of books. They very often have books from the Black Library giving you a ton of Warhammer books. Sometimes it's standard E-books, other times it's audiobooks. A few times a year they do bundles for graphic design, a typical bundle would include programs like Paintshop Pro Corel Painter etc, They usually go for £0.76 for tier 1 up to around £18 for tier 3, which would include 4-6 full titles with 10+ addons. They also often have Music making bundles or video editing software as well as Programming or video game development.
The bundles change often, they usually have around 11 bundles at a time that last for 20 days. Sometimes it's trash but they do often have some very good deals.
Fanatical offers the same as humble bundle except usually not as high quality, but sometimes they do have some incredible deals, and they are very very cheap.
Both humble and fanatical are safe, trusted and been around a long time, and they are NOT grey market key sites. They work with the publishers and developers. You can buy games both old and new for a lot cheaper than you would most other places. Unless it states otherwise, keys are usually for steam.
**BOTH HB and Fanatical (HB much more common) offer free games fairly often. The catch is linking your steam account to them (at least HB). It is safe however.
IndieGala is another site like above. Except, these are much much lower quality. However, they offer a metric ton of free games. Quality is low but it is legitimate, and a lot of free stuff.
Game Store Fronts
  • Steam This one is so obvious I didn't add it, but apparently many want me to. It is the best out there, and you can find almost everything, with fantastic deals.
  • Greenmangaming offers games cheaply. Again, not a grey market site (which are legal but unethical) and they sometimes do bundles.
  • GoG (Good old games) is a DRM free site run by CDPR, the makers of the Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk. They offer you games quite cheap and not needing DRM (such as Steam, Uplay etc which is less invasive versions of dodgy DRM from the olden days).
  • Epic Games Despite the controversy whether you care about their rivalry with valve, they offer free games ever week. Without ever having bought anything I have gained over 170 games. literally. Good games for the most part. They often give you £10 coupons as well.
  • Twitch Everyone knows twitch, but if you don't, it's a streaming service for watching gamers and girls with low cut tops accidentally bending over in front of the game. However, if you're signed up to prime, you get free games each month (and randomly between the set bunch).
  • Playstation Store Currently has January sales. Currently the free games for PS+ are for PS4: Shadow of the Tomb Raider and Greedfall. For the Ps5 it is Maneater
  • Games with Gold Bleed 2 and the King of Fighters XIII is available until Janurary 15th whilst little Nightmares is available until January 31st.
Gaming Subscriptions
Like the TV versions, you can sign up to these for a free trial (or very cheap). If you do sign up to only one at a time, it should keep you busy for a few months
  • Xbox Game Pass You can do this on both/either an Xbox or PC. If you sign up to the regular one, you can get a month (maybe three!) for £1. After you have done that, you can sign up to the premium version for 3 months at £1 a month. Most people know game pass, but you can download a large selection of games for free. The premium version gives you games with gold, allowing you to keep the games forever (but can only play with a subscription)
  • Ubisoft+ I'm not 100% sure if you get a trial or not. This allows a large collection of Ubisoft titles to play for £12.99 a month. Quite expensive but good if you like Ubisoft titles I guess.
  • EA Play EA's version. Goes by a ton of names I think, EA Access, EA Play, Origin Access etc etc. There's a couple of versions of this, and it is across all platforms (PS4/5, Xbox, PC) but not sure about the switch. I "think" the premium allows you to play on all platforms, while the cheaper one on a single platform, but I may be mistaken.
  • PS Now a once terrible service that is now actually very good. Allows you to download some Ps4 games to your PS4/5 and lets you stream a massive amount of Ps2/3/4 to your PC or playstation.
There's more like nvidia's service but you need the Shield device which is quite expensive. I'll leave it at that.
Audiobooks & Ebooks
  • Audible Not sure what the current deal is but if you are a prime member you can sign up for a trial and get a free Audiobook each month for 3 months. Some warhammer books are 48 hours long, 3 of those gives you a good 100+ hours of listening!
  • Comixology Another Amazon company, but lets you download some free comics I believe.
  • Marvel Unlimited No experience with this. ItFuckingWont wanted me to add it. A subscription service for Marvel.
Education
  • Sign Language BSL here No experience myself, suggested by n21brown and asked for a few times. Didn't know SL was so popular! Listed as "Pay what you can"
  • BBC's Bitesize here is apparently good for home learning. Again, no personal experience.
If you need some spare change
Okay, I don't generally bother with it, but maybe some of this could be useful to you. These are NOT a quick way to make a fortune. These are small things you can do over time for a bit of pocket change
  • If you have prime you can get a FREE FIVE POUND GIFT CARD by literally just streaming a song from Amazon music (which is included in prime) here is the details According to the comments it's only for select people, but it's worth trying If the link doesn't work for you just google "Amazon £5 coupon music"
  • Now, these sorts of sites have been around for years, I haven't used any other than talkInsights which I must have signed up to 10-15 years ago. Basically they send you surveys and you answer them. They are confidential and don't ask for personal details in the survey. You need 2000 points and you get £20. During the pandemic they've slowed down but I probably get around £40 a year. Not much I know, but it's an email followed by a quick survey ticking boxes. Depending on your answer sometimes you get screened out, I'm not telling you to lie but just be consistent with your answers and you should be able to work out how to not get screened. Some emails are only worth 20 points, others 200. It's slow to get to the 2000 but very quick to just answer a few questions.
  • Apparently beermoneyuk is a good sub to make some pocket change with.
  • There is also matched betting. I have never done this, I don't have the patience but from what I've read, it's legitimate, it works and you can make a fair amount of cash from it so long as you do it correctly, and there's a ton of guides. I mention this because people stuck at home could get into it and as long as you're careful (I.E not entering in the wrong numbers) it's risk free AND it pisses off the betting shops. It seems people in comments have had success with it. Disclaimer A couple have complained about gambling. This arguably is not gambling. If you are susceptible to addiction do not do it. However, it's argued that there is no fun or buzz in this, and it's a very tedious and time consuming thing. Others argue you can't make the same money anymore (People were making thousands, now only hundreds if that). It's risk free providing you know what you're doing, the risks are user error, such as entering the wrong numbers. Someone pointed out that due to the lockdown, bets could potentially be cancelled due to sport stopping. So use on a side of caution. We're (mainly) adults so I'll leave it up just because this doesn't have the excitement of regular gambling.
  • Microsoft Rewards This is an easy way to make pocket change doing very little. Most people have a MS account. The rewards program offers you numerous ways to grab points, by playing free to play games, answering small questions (you don't even need to answer most of the time, just open the link and shut it) and by using bing and searching on it. I've gotten 20k points JUST by answering questions over a couple months. There are many rewards but you can grab a £5 gift card for 6k for example, or a month of game pass (and AFAIK you can make points playing the games)
  • Google rewards Someone mentioned this in the comments. I have not used it, so can not give any input on it. Sounds similar to TalkInsights which I linked. Google states "Complete short surveys while standing in line, or waiting for a subway. Get rewarded with Google Play or PayPal credit for each one you complete. Topics include everything from opinion polls, to hotel reviews, to merchant satisfaction surveys. We’ll notify you when a survey is waiting."
That's it for now. I will try to update as I go along. A long post but I hope that it can help some of you with finding something good to do that's free, cheap or a bargain. I do suggest getting prime, especially since you get free music, free delivery, free TV and music and free video games each month. In fact, there's a ton of perks and I feel I've gotten way over the cost investment.
Hope it helps someone at least
PartTimeCrazy said if you bought an Apple product you get 3 free months of Apple Arcade and Apple TV free for a year

HEALTH
I'm not a doctor! But if you're a smoker, something I strongly suggest is to quit. I struggled for years but in the first lockdown I quit, technically. I haven't had a cigarette since, however, I do that silly thing millennials do. I vape, but, it made quitting extremely easy. I would not have been able to do it if it wasn't for 88Vape They sell extremely cheap liquids at £1 each. You can find these in B&M but you can pick up 25 for £20 or buy your own mix.
Vitamin D deficiency has been said to be a big problem for the virus. I'd suggest (again, not a doctor!) that you pick some up. Tesco do a 3 for 2 deal. So you can pick up 270 tablets for £7.
If you are vulnerable you MIGHT be able to phone tesco and get put on their delivery saver list (currently it's paused but phoning may help. At the very least they might give you a priority slot. I did this for my mum, we didn't shop at Tesco but I phoned for her, and they put her on with no hassle, so she can always get a delivery.
HELP & ADVICE
The lockdown Rules.
Reasons to leave home include:
  • Work or volunteering where it is "unreasonable" to work from home. This includes work in someone else's home, such as that carried out by social workers, nannies, cleaners and tradespeople
  • Education, training, childcare and medical appointments and emergencies
  • Exercise outdoors (limited to once a day). This includes meeting one other person from another household in an open public space to exercise
  • Shopping for essentials such as food and medicine
  • Communal religious worship
  • Meeting your support or childcare bubble. Children can also move between separated parents Activities related to moving house
I want to add, if you are in danger you are also allowed (and must!) to get away from the situation for some reason, BBC seems to have missed this very important thing (or I am blind)
Support
FOR THOSE SHIELDING YOU CAN CONTACT THE ROYAL VOLUNTARY SERVICE. These people helped my mother with picking up her medicine from the chemist. They were very helpful and went out their way to keep in touch and do it immediately. (It's the only experience I have with them though)
_riotingpacifist wanted these links added, but I simply just don't have the time to vet and check all the suggestions here, so I will link as is:
Update:
Digital Art
These are Free
  • Krita Arguably the best in my opinion. It has a load of options, brushes and a decent UI. It works fantastic with a tablet.
  • Gimp This is a decent program but last I used, the UI was a pain, and it isn't so user friendly while misses features, but it works, and it is possible to do some incredible creations on it.
  • Medibang Paint This is slightly geared towards Comics and Manga. I really enjoy using this with my drawing Tablet. As far as I know, it also for regular tablets for Android/Ipad and is free.
You can pick up a drawing tablet on Amazon quite cheap these days! Small ones that are just a black slate such as the wacom ones are good but takes some practice to get use to, but very worth it if you can't afford a dedicated drawing tablet with a screen.
Office suit software
A couple of free applications for word processing, spreadsheets etc.
  • LibreOffice This has most the average user would need to write their own books or to work from home. There's not a huge amount of difference between the two I'm linking (since I last used anyway) so it's more for preference.
  • Open Office You can pick this up here and again, like above it's just preference.
Music Making
I'm going to direct to matthewharris806 for some links as all the programs I've used like Reason are expensive, or cheaper stuff in bundles such as Magix software.
Games development

I bought a PS4 at the start of 2020 and played video games a bit too much this crazy year! Here are my rankings and brief reviews of the 32 excellent games I finished this year, as well as my thoughts on patient gaming.

Introduction:

It's basically trite at this point to say this year has been challenging, but one positive out of everything is that I've been fortunate enough to have the time and funds to play a huge number of games that I've heard so much about, yet never was able to before now. I grew up on almost exclusively Nintendo games and then branched out to indie games in college I could play on my laptop, so I was more than excited when I bought the base PS4 that came bundled with God of War, Last of Us, and Horizon Zero Dawn for $200 (and I snagged Bloodborne for $15 while I was at it).
What ensued was a year of frenzied gaming-- never in any year of my life have I played games as much as I did this year. I enjoyed it, but there were also some surprising drawbacks to placing such an emphasis on gaming as a primary hobby, and I'll discuss those towards the conclusion. But man, there were some absolutely fantastic games that I played this year and I want to share my thoughts on them! Not every game I played this year was PS4, but most were.
Since literally every game I played this year was a good game, I have stratified my rankings into three overarching tiers: Best, Great, and Good. I was lucky enough to not even need a Meh tier this year. Lots of games within the same tier could probably have their orders switched, but I did my best. And all but two of these games I was patient™ on, which is a fun side note.
Disclaimer*:* These rankings reflect my personal opinions on the experience I had after finishing the game, rather than my thoughts on its overall quality as a product for everyone. There are a few rankings that are sure to ruffle some feathers-- I know that God of War, RDR2, Journey, Undertale, and Nier: Automata for example are great games, but they didn't resonate with me nearly as much as some others. So know that I appreciate them and those who hold these games so dear.
Without further ado, let's get going!

The BEST:

1. Bloodborne (PS4): Quite simply, I'm still chasing the feeling I had after playing this game for the first time. So much so you could say, that I played it 7 times this year. Never has a game enraptured me with its shocking world, brutal combat, and the best DLC I've ever played. I want to talk about Bloodborne (and all the souls games, really) constantly, learn everything about them, and play them forever.
  1. Last of Us Part II (PS4): One of two games I broke being patient™ on, I waited a couple months before diving in just to stop working to avoid spoilers. I enjoyed the first game but this absolutely blew me out of the water. On a gameplay level I couldn't believe how fluid and visceral the combat was, how immense the encounters were with countless approaches to every situation, and how fun it was to play. The narrative was challenging and forced me to grapple with the same emotions as the protagonist initially, then brilliantly the player and character on divergent emotional tracks as you become more shocked and uncomfortable with what happens. I encourage anyone who hasn't yet to play with an open mind and avoid trying to reduce the story to a single theme or message. It may not be your cup of tea, but it was mine.
3. Outer Wilds (PS4): This game feels like it was made just for me. I love space and rocket physics, I love discovery, and I love it when a game makes me feel clever. The level of wonder and curiosity I felt while playing can only be compared to what I experienced with Breath of the Wild. This game is difficult to talk about without spoilers, but if discovery and outer space get you excited, there is nothing like Outer Wilds.
  1. Dark Souls III (PS4): Yeah, I like souls games. While certainly less groundbreaking than DS1 and perhaps less atmospheric than Bloodborne, DS3 is a grand experience with, in my opinion, the best bosses in all the souls games. It's also the best souls game for experimenting with different playstyles without needing to watch 6 hours of VaatiVidya to figure out how to be a pyromancer.
  2. Control (PS4): Objectively speaking, this game might not have the same merits as the others in the "Best" category. But it sucked me in with it's completely unique visual style. It felt like a strange acid trip and I was always excited to see what was next. The powers and combat were fun even if not terribly original (and even though the gunplay wasn't too strong) but I was completely enthralled by the nonchalance of the cast amid mind blowing supernatural activity. Far from a perfect game, but give it a chance if the style seems intriguing to you!

The Great:

  1. The Last of Us Remastered (PS4): One of my most anticipated games when I picked up a PS4, having watched my friends play some of it. Though it didn't blow me away as much in 2020 as it might have in 2013, I thought it had decent gameplay, a great story, and a stunning world. The cities and post-apocalyptic environments were a pleasure to soak in, packed with detail, and well paced. Definitely a deserved classic.
  2. Horizon Zero Dawn (PS4): In a lot of ways, this game isn't good as an open world game. It doesn't do a great job of compelling you to explore and engage with all the cool stuff it has. The sidequests are kind of bad, many characters forgettable and oddly animated. But this game is this high on the list because it's just so much fun taking down machine dinosaurs. They nailed gameplay in a technically beautiful world, and actually surprised me with the quality of the main story line. Not groundbreaking, but solid and a joy to play.
  3. Death Stranding (PS4): For being one of the best games I have ever played, Death Stranding kinda sucks. I absolutely adored the premise and the world Kojima crafted, and delivering packages was really enjoyable. I loved figuring out traversal and just soaking in the graphics. I'm not one that normally cares about technical graphical showcases, but this game has made me reconsider how important graphics can be to an experience. Unfortunately, the dreadful gun mechanics, broken driving, constant NPC interjections, and the game's refusal to just end already kinda bogged it down. There's a lot here though that won me over and is an experience unlike anything I've ever played.
  4. Animal Crossing: New Horizons (Nintendo Switch): The other game on this list I was not patient™ for, since I bought it for my wife... and then got sucked in. Truth is, as a non-creative type, I just loved this game as an outlet for my creativity and expression. I loved having projects like my zen garden, my Domino's Pizza restaurant, and then getting to share them with my friends. I've heard it said something along the lines of "It wasn't the best game of 2020, but it was the game for 2020".
  5. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt (PS4): Once I adjusted my expectations of what this game was and was not, it was great. While it doesn't reward open exploration as much as BoTW and Skyrim did, it simply has the best quests of any open world game I've played. Very rich environments and stories, and I even thought the gameplay was more than serviceable. It did kind of drag on by the end though. Also, disclaimer, I haven't played the DLC (sorry).
  6. Return of the Obra Dinn (Nintendo Switch): I had hoped it would blow me away in a way similar to Outer Wilds, and while it didn't quite reach the same heights for me it was great nonetheless. I loved the nautical setting, the critical thinking and deduction required, and the way it was balanced perfectly between leaving you totally on your own and confirming bits at a time. My only real complaint is that I felt the true ending didn't really reveal anything about the story I didn't already know, I guess I expected some grand reveal.
  7. Doom Eternal (PS4): White-knuckle, heart pounding, insane. The game forces you to engage with every mechanic it throws at you and is brutally challenging, but all in the best way. Though the gameplay was better than DOOM 2016, I actually preferred the latter since Eternal's levels felt more like a silly mario level than a tense demon-infested place. I get what they were going for and they executed well, I just prefer the more serious tone.
  8. Hades (Nintendo Switch): Biggest surprise of the year for me, I didn't actually expect to like it. Hades is perfectly polished and a big step forward for integrating its excellent narrative with its roguelike structure. It's very easy to play without investing too much, making it great for unwinding. It deserves all the praise it's getting.
  9. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves (Remastered) (PS4): All the mainline Uncharted games are on this list but I enjoyed 2 the most. The set pieces were the most memorable, and I enjoyed almost every second. These games aren't as high on the list because, no matter how you dress it up, it's a pretty simple affair ultimately in terms of gameplay but it nails the style of game that it is.
  10. Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice (PS4): An amazing game in its own right, but was ultimately disappointing for me as a From Software fan. I found that what I appreciated most about Souls games was the tension of not knowing if you could make it to the next checkpoint, the terror of encountering something surprising and having to deal with it. Sekiro litters checkpoints left and right, which is of course great for its more boss-focused design, but left me far less immersed in the environments personally. I also wished I had more options for playing aggressively rather than just memorizing the parry patterns. In any case, these gripes are my personal preferences coming through and any hardcore gamer owes it to themselves to conquer this behemoth of a challenge.
  11. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1+2 (PS4): Pure, unadulterated fun. I was absolutely addicted to the core gameplay and the levels, especially in the first game, were so cool to explore. For me the core loop started to get stale by the time I finished all the challenges on the levels, but for those that wanted more there is almost an endless amount of bonus challenges to tackle.
  12. Uncharted 4: A Thief's End (PS4): There's definitely a strong argument that this is the ultimate uncharted game to play-- best gunplay and options in encounters, by far the best puzzles, and the delivery of the story is leagues above the rest of the series. I simply think that Uncharted 2 had the highest highs, so 4 is a tad lower. That, and the beautiful story set up was not brought together in a satisfying way; it in no way felt like Drake had earned Elena's forgiveness, but they kind just glossed over it. Still, a must play and Naughty Dog games at their best.
  13. Subnautica (PS4): I wanted to love it more than I did. I was hooked on exploring and discovering the mysteries of the alien underwater, but I think I do better with games with less of a survival focus. I got really far into the game, but didn't actually finish since eventually the slow drip of clues started to get a bit too slow for my tastes, and the survival and basebuilding began to get tedious. Minor PS4 technical issues aside though, This is a dang good survival game, and immense in a terrifying and wonderful way.
  14. Monster Train (PC): Slay the Spire is one of my all-time favorites, so I was pretty excited to be gifted this. It's a blast as a deckbuilder, and I think it was smartly designed in how it throws significant and strong rewards at you at every phase of a run, whereas StS often forces you to make the best of an iffy situation. Had a great time, but I lost interest after 15 or so hours since most runs tend to feel fairly similar. Still would absolutely recommend for StS and deckbuilding fans.
  15. Spelunky (PC): Not the hardest game I've ever played, but definitely the most unforgiving. The controls took a while to get used to but once I was engaged, the game is a tight, slick, and enthralling adventure and test of skills. Full of secrets (I've only scratched the surface) and deeply satisfying to conquer. But boy, is it unforgiving.
  16. Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception (Remastered) (PS4): Another strong entry in the Uncharted series, just a tad weaker than 2 I think. I will credit it though with having the most memorable environments and locales in any Uncharted though!

The Good:

  1. Read Dead Redemption II (PS4): *Full disclosure, I'm still playing through act 5 at the time of this post.* This one is really tough for me to fully form an opinion on. On the one hand, I think this is the most stunning and immersive open world I've ever seen. Deeply authentic towns, regions, unparalleled attention to detail, and great characters and a decent story. But the way the missions force you to do things explicitly one way with terrible hand-holding just isn't fun to me, and makes Uncharted games feel like open-world sandboxes by comparison. There's a lot of quality here and I've enjoyed many elements, but have been disillusioned by others. NakeyJakey explains what I felt far better than I can (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MvJPKOLDSos&t=392s). Still a good time though.
  2. God of War (PS4): Like RDR2, an incredible technical achievement, for me hands down the best looking PS4 game, best voice acting, and for most people this should be towards the top of your must-play list. At its best, the characters are great, the combat is crunchy and satisfying, and the world beautiful. I just felt that for far too often the game was far from its best-- too many combat encounters didn't feel like I was a God of War but rather smacking a giant meat sack of health, so many secrets and puzzles that I just stopped caring about because finding treasure chests isn't fun when the rpg/loot elements feel so tacked on and pointless, endlessly recycled bosses... for me it was just pretty good, nothing like the game of the generation in my eyes. That said, most people don't seem too bothered by the things I found mediocre, so the sheer spectacle (looking at you world serpent!) and great moments make this well worth the price of admission!
  3. Undertale (PC): I did not play this game the way it was meant to be played, let's say that up front. It was a gift, and I played about a half an hour every month for a year and just finally finished it. I loved the music, it was charming, and I see why people love this game so much. I think it just didn't hit those highs for me and I was left with a fairly silly little 8-bit game. Which was good. I'm glad I experienced what it had to offer but didn't leave a huge mark on me.
  4. Superhot (Google Stadia): I had wanted to play this game forever but couldn't justify spending $20 on it, so I was pleased when I got a free Google Stadia kit and got to play it free! Really neat blend of stylized retro computer flavor and a fabulous central time-stop mechanic. A great 2 hour experience but tough to recommend as more than a novelty.
  5. NieR: Automata (PS4): I have made it through 1.5 playthroughs so I know I haven't gotten the full experience, but I wasn't enjoying it enough to continue. I think every game developer though should learn from the brilliance of this game-- constantly keeping the player on its toes by not confining itself by a genre and by focusing on what's fun and cool, rather than convention. Excellent music. I get the hype, and the healthy dose of existential musings was interesting... it just didn't ultimately click for me. I can't unequivocally recommend this game to everyone, but if the premise and style stand out to you, this could be your next all-time favorite game.
  6. Star Wars Battlefront II (PS4): Picked this up for free with PS Plus, and while there's not a lot here that's that special it was honestly super nice comfort food gaming. I just enjoyed shooting stuff in really cool Star Wars settings, a franchise I love. For what it was, I had a blast, minus the fact that I personally feel Jedi/heroes really kinda ruin the game for me. Unfortunately, it also is nothing more than a basic mass multiplayer battlefield game, so don't expect anything crazy.
  7. Uncharted: Drake's Fortune (Remastered) (PS4): Definitely weaker than its successors, but still a really fun romp with trope-y but effective narrative and characters, and totally serviceable gunplay. This would be much higher on the list, and I honestly had a great time with it, but man the final third of the game was really painful to play. The switch to zombies was bad, and just wasn't fun to play through.
  8. Until Dawn (PS4): I did not think I would like this game at all, I don't care for cheesy horror and definitely am not interested in interactive movies. But if you have a significant other or group of friends to play this with, it can be a great time! I played with my wife and we were honestly pretty engaged with the characters and the story was well told and had plenty of nice jump scares. There's not much game here, but for what it is it was a neat experience.
  9. Shadow of the Colossus (Remake) (PS4): There were some incredible highlights to this game like the flying colossus and the sand worm, and the scale of the encounters with the epic music has earned this game a place as a masterpiece and classic to so many gamers. The remake looks stunning and it was exciting to see what type of colossus was up next. Unfortunately, every great moment I had was accompanied by an equally frustrating moment with mediocre controls and a couple of colossus that were so bad (looking at you, little bull/lion Celosia) that made me have to put down the game for a few days. A great game let down by some dated and poor elements.
  10. Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin (PS4): Souls games are my favorites, so it pains me to put this game so low. The best areas in the game (Heide's tower, Drangleic Castle, etc) are up there with the best in the series and most of the excellent combat found in the other games is more or less present here. But I think 2/3 of the game is bogged down by drab areas that feel more like a mario level designed to kill the player more than an area that could really exist. The Iron keep was the worst offender, the area was absolutely nonsensical and like so many other areas, enemies were placed in a way designed to frustrate the player with difficulty rather than engage them with challenge. Bosses were also mostly forgettable, but I did love the Looking Glass knight and the Pursuer!
  11. Journey (PS4): Look, I'm as surprised as you that this game is on the bottom of the list. I honestly expected to love it. An artistic, beautiful marriage of environmental storytelling and unforgettable online interaction? A smooth and cathartic movement system? It has all these things, and no doubt deserves the acclaim and love it has from so many gamers. It just didn't resonate with me. Especially the ending, I felt for sure that there would be some great climax that contrasted with the struggle of the icy segment, but instead it fell a bit flat. Maybe I'll give it another try someday.

Conclusion, Gaming Patiently, and a Warning:

There you have it! I'd love to hear what surprised you in my rankings, where I'm horribly wrong, and what games you recommend I play next! Personally, I'm considering Persona 5 (though I'm not super into JRPGs), Dishonored 2 (am curious about immersive sims), and Jedi Fallen Order.
Gaming patiently is a strategy I absolutely endorse. Not only has it allowed me to form my own opinions of games independent of hype, but has allowed me to play a huge quantity of incredible games for honestly pennies. The average cost per game of everything I played this year was under $20. Now, more than ever, is an amazing time to get a PS4 and be a patient gamer, due to both the relative inexpensiveness and the sheer volume of outstanding games. I still will probably buy the big nintendo titles at launch and occasionally buy into hype, but most of the time it just isn't worth it anymore.
Finally, a friendly warning as a personal story for those of us who deeply love games and devote a lot of time to them. Like many kids, I was pretty limited by my parents growing up on what and how much I was allowed to play. I loved gaming but it was somewhat of a forbidden fruit. In college, I loved gaming and definitely played more, but still was very busy with social activities, studies, and other hobbies. Now, as a working adult with a comfortable job, I suddenly have more time and money than I have ever had in my life, and thus this giant list of games I played was created. For the first few months it was enthralling; all I wanted to do was play. Over the course of the year, however, it has become clear to me that requiring so much of my happiness and fun coming from having a game to be excited about can have some drawbacks. In the middle of a pandemic, if I'm sitting on the couch waiting for video games to make me happy and they just aren't giving me the same enjoyment that Bloodborne did when I played it for the first time, I'm just gonna be stuck there on the couch, slowly getting a bit depressed when my main source of fun isn't cutting it. So what's the point? Well, enjoy your games! Don't let anyone stop you from loving what you love. But if you start to burn out, please take care of yourself and engage in other hobbies, get outside, and keep things balanced. For me, doing so has made gaming all the sweeter.
Thanks for reading and indulging this long post!

It's February, and while we should probably be done with all the celebrations by now, we aren't! Aircraft carriers are coming to Legends as a part of special test event, a branch of British heavy cruisers is arriving in Early Access, a new game mode—Arena—is shaking up the battlefield, and our latest Campaign features the fabled dragon slayer realized in steel—Tier VII German battlecruiser Siegfried. Add to that Lunar New Year content and some balance tweaks, and this Update is bound to make for an exciting start to 2021!
Please note: while this Update runs for 5 weeks, the next one will be released on Tuesday, March 9, instead of the usual Monday.

Air Strike Event

At long last, aircraft carriers are storming into Legends, albeit in a form of a test event. We're starting with Tier III and V ships separated into their own mode for the first 2 weeks of the Update (Feb 1–15). You'll be able to try out Japanese carriers III Hōshō and V Ryūjō, as well as their American counterparts, III Langley and V Ranger. To command the new ships you'll get the help of Ernest King for the U.S. flattops and Tamon Yamaguchi for the Japanese machines.
To get yourself behind the helm of one of the carriers you'll first have to win a couple of battles in this mode playing a non-carrier. We understand that most of you will be interested in playing carriers rather than against them, therefore the Airstrike mode has bots added to fill the battles, considering that only one carrier per side is allowed. Another important point is that we’ll allow our volunteers and a few randomly selected players to get carriers right away (ostensibly, just two battles before everyone else) to collect more data. We understand that they will have a bit more experience with the ship type at the moment of release, but that curve will flatten within the first week.
We hope that you’ll get enough of a first look to give us ample feedback! We plan to bring carriers into the game as a mainstay several Updates after this event.
Some important info about carriers in their current form:
  1. You can only control one entity on the screen at a time, so once your squadron is in the air, you lose control of the carrier.
  2. You have access to two types of squadrons—torpedo and dive bombers. The first type launches torpedoes that deal damage and may cause flooding, the second type dives to drop HE bombs that can start fires or incapacitate modules, as well as deal damage
  3. The AA suites of other ship types have received no changes, and for the purpose of this test, we're not enabling the display of AA stats yet either. Considering the limited power of carriers in their current form, as well as the limitation of one per team, we're expecting that the current AA suites will be sufficient, even without consumables and/or rebalancing. Don't forget that it is indeed a test event, so we need to collect as much data as we can.
  4. The AA guns of other ship types begin to fire as soon as an enemy aircraft is within proximity, and they do not affect the firing ship's detectability. However, the enemy will see where the AA fire is originating from.
  5. Catapult Fighters for all cruisers and battleships have been changed to make them less of a passive spotting satellite and more of a countermeasure against carrier attacks:
    1. For most cruisers, the cooldown for Catapult Fighter has been reduced from 180 to 80 seconds, while the time the plane stays in the air has been reduced from 360 to 100 seconds.
    2. For battleships, the cooldown has been reduced from 180 to 80 seconds.
  6. There are no servicing costs for carriers in the Air Strike mode. Other ship types retain regular ship servicing costs.
  7. Once the Air Strike mode concludes on February 15, the aircraft carriers and Commanders will be removed from your accounts. Any experience accrued on the carriers will be transferred to Tier I ships of the appropriate nations.
Control-wise, hitting enemy ships with your torpedoes and bombs is going to be the most difficult aspect of the gameplay, so don't be hard on yourself if you miss the first few drops. Just as shells require a lead, planes require one too, and you need to get an understanding of your window of opportunity whenever launching an attack.
You'll be able to use ships of up to Tier VI when playing against the carriers, and you'll want to play the regular ships as there are several sets of available missions! The first batch will be available during week one of the Update, encompassing getting your first carriers (New Dimensions), carrier mastery (Born to Fly), and prowess in battling against them (Born to Swim). Week two will offer similarly titled missions for Tier IV–VI ships. The missions are chained, and Born to Fly can be quite specific with its requirements, so make sure you familiarize yourself with them!

British Heavy Cruisers

An entirely new line of ships is entering our waters in Early Access! There are quite a few differences that these ships possess in comparison with their lighter counterparts. First, they have access to HE shells, and while the ballistic trajectories may be comparatively arced, the per-salvo damage is quite significant, no matter what shell type you use. They are also relatively well armored and have an improved Repair Party consumable that restores significantly more citadel damage than it does for other nations. Additionally, these cruisers have access to Sonar, plus their torpedoes can be launched individually, further improving your tactical freedom. Something, of course, has to give, and that something is speed and maneuverability. You'll have to “play chess” a lot of the time and try to predict your opponents’ movements.
To gain Early Access to either of the ships, open the British cruiser crates that are available in the Campaign and in the Store. As usual, the higher the ship tier, the lower the chances of getting her, and big crates offer better chances for all ships. While there's no Tier VII Albermarle available through Early Access, Tier V Premium ship London is among the ships that may drop as a reward. Please check out the drop chances at wowslegends.com/containers before making your purchasing decisions! Among the goods that can drop from the containers is also the Union Jack expendable Camo, which you can convert into the permanent version for any of your ships, including non-British ships.

The available ships are:
  • IV Hawkins
  • V Devonshire
  • VI Surrey
Tier VII Albermarle will become available with the next Update, once the ships become researchable.

The Dragonslayer Campaign

German battlecruiser (cruiser in our game) Siegfried is the centerpiece of our new Campaign. She's capable in a multitude of situations, thanks to her powerful guns with strong AP rounds, as well as her torpedoes and Sonar. The ship has found her home at Tier VII among the top competition, and she's ready to take on all comers.
Much like the previous Campaign, we're introducing a currency that you'll be able to earn once you're done with the main Campaign—from this Update onwards, it’s Steel. You'll be able to earn it after reaching the final milestone of the Campaign, no matter whether you have the Admiralty Backing or not. However, if you purchase the Campaign prior to the last week, you'll be able to get more Steel from Daily and Weekly Missions. Steel will become an increasingly useful resource as we add ships and other rewards available in exchange for it. The most exciting offer right away is probably going to be USS Missouri, but it will take seasoned Captains several updates to gather enough Steel to obtain her. This Campaign in particular will allow you to amass as much as 1,250 units of Steel, provided that you buy it outright on day one. Otherwise, if you finish it on the first day of week 5, you'll be able to up your Steel count by 250. Other than Missouri, you'll be able to obtain various goods in exchange for Steel, starting with Commander items. More Steel is always going to be available from either Arena or Ranked modes than from Campaigns.
The Campaign rewards include the usual array of goods—currencies, XP, Commander items, and so forth, but importantly, there are also several Royal Navy Cruisers crates that might just contain one of the newcomers!
All of the available rewards can be found below.

Arena Mode

And now for something (mostly) different. We're introducing a new game mode! Arena is a seasonal team death match event that features four teams of three ships. You'll get the chance to show off your skills playing Tier V ships and make a name for yourself across the entire Legends community by climbing the ladder! The first iteration of ladder is going to count all of your ship XP with all possible Boosters applied, so those who play the most and use boosters will come out on top. However, we will try different methods (including those unaffected by Boosters or Premium) later on. Please consider this a test season in this regards, as we plan to use other metrics in the future—not necessarily boostable by anything other than the number of games played. Importantly, the biggest reward of this season (for the top 1% of the leaderboard) is 2,500 units of Steel, which you can either stockpile over several updates to go for USS Missouri (30,000 Steel), or use to get some intermediate goods, such as Commander items.
The basic rules are:
  • Arena battles are going to be available from February 15 to March 9.
  • There are four teams on the map, with each comprising three Tier V ships.
  • If a team's ship or ships are the last to stay afloat, then that team wins and each of the players on the team gets +30% XP for the match.
  • The matchmaker will try to mirror the ship types of all four teams, but will allow for non-mirrored compositions after particular thresholds.
  • There are no ship type limitations per team or per Division. However, the less diverse your team is, the longer it would take to find a match (for example, for three-destroyer or three-battleship Divisions).
  • There's only one Key Area on each map, in the very center.
  • This mode features friendly fire. If you hit an ally, 20% of the damage will be applied to their ship. Ramming is not, however, affected by friendly fire. Players who fire at their allies will not receive any XP for the battle, so we ask you to be extra careful, especially with torpedoes!
  • We understand that players might damage their allies by mistake, but serial griefers will be dealt with accordingly.
  • If there are ships from more than one team still afloat at the end of the match, said match is considered a draw and no team receives the 30% bonus.
Maps available in the first season of Arena:
  • Ring
  • Strait
  • New Dawn
Rewards are credited once the season is over. The exact reward you receive will depend on your standing on the ladder at the moment the season ends. There are six tiers of rewards, depending on which percentile of the ladder you end up occupying:
  • Participation trophy
    • 10x Promotion Orders
    • 3x basic crates
    • 500,000 credits
  • Top 90%
    • 20x Promotion Orders
    • 2x Royal Navy Cruisers crates
    • 30,000 Commander XP
  • Top 50%
    • 25x Promotion Orders
    • 2x Winter Big Crates
    • 20,000 global XP
  • Top 25%
    • 1x Insignia
    • 2x Big Royal Navy Cruisers Crates
    • 500 Paint
  • Top 10%
    • 2x Commendations
    • 2x Commander crates
    • 1,000 doubloons
  • Top 1%
    • Arena Season 1 Champion flag
    • 2x Lunar New Year crates
    • 2,500 Steel

Lunar New Year Content

To commemorate the Lunar New Year celebrations, the home Port will be set to a themed haven and special content will be offered in the Store. You'll get a choice of two ships and a special container, combined in different bundles. This content will become available in the Premium Store on February 12, and we’ll announce the end date for sales separately.

You can expect the following content:
  • Southern Dragon and Eastern Dragon—visually different variants of Tier VI cruiser Myōkō with Premium bonuses applied. The stats are unchanged compared to Myōkō.
  • Lunar New Year crates, containing such goods as the Air Dragon and Fire Dragon Disposable Camos.
  • The "Ox" personal patch and a similar flag is available in one of the bundles.

Balance Changes

There are only a few balance touch ups this time, but all of them were really called for. You'll be the ultimate judge of that, of course!
  • Cheshire
    • Rudder-shift time decreased from 10.5 to 9 seconds.
    • Main battery reload time reduced from 17 to 16 seconds.
    • Repair Party modified—it now restores the same amount of HP but over 9.3 seconds instead of 27.
  • Cossack
    • Main battery reload time reduced from 5 to 4.5 seconds.
    • Torpedo reload time reduced from 96 to 72 seconds.
  • Charlemagne
    • Main battery reload decreased from 13 to 12 seconds.
    • Extremity armor improved from 16 to 25 mm.
  • Vanguard
    • HP restored to citadel by Repair Party increased from 16% to 25%.
    • Shell grouping improved by about 2.6%, and in so many words, it's just a slight buff to the accuracy.
    • Repair party modified—it now restores the same amount of HP but over 10 seconds instead of 28.
  • Duke of York
    • Base number of charges for Sonar increased from 1 to 2.
There are also a couple of changes to skills and consumables, namely:
  • The Fight Fire With Fire skill now works if Damage Control Party is either on cooldown or depleted (previously, the skill couldn't be activated when the consumable charges were depleted).
  • The Enhanced Secondary Targeting consumable available on battleships now has three charges by default (up from two), and its cooldown has been lowered by 20 seconds, to 160 seconds instead of 180.
Continuing our tradition of hiding bonus codes in the Patchnotes, here's another one for 12 Hunter camouflages: S3YFESP75W.
https://preview.redd.it/4oy1c8vwx1e61.png?width=1920&format=png&auto=webp&s=67913fecc724a696a1c38e08294f76e9adbd416a

Miscellaneous Changes and Improvements

  • Our voice chat now works again between any platforms that Legends is available on! Previously, Xbox Series S/X players could not use voice communications with any PlayStation players.
  • Rental Legendary ships have been removed from your accounts. Any XP you earned on them has been moved to Tier I ships of their nations, and any modifications have been placed in your Inventory.
  • Gunshots have received improved visual effects (the barrel action).
  • The Azur Lane Fusou, Azur Lane Queen Elizabeth, and Azur Lane Scharnhorst Commanders have received the Fight Fire With Fire Legendary skill.
  • The following ships can now be outfitted with historical Camouflages that can be created in the loadout menu for 75 Paint (please note: any such Permanent Camo is going to be of the lowest grade unless upgraded with Paint):
    • Fusō
    • Aoba
    • Fubuki
    • New York
    • New Mexico
    • Pensacola
    • Farragut
    • Mahan

Bug Fixes

  • Players could sometimes encounter HDR turning off and then back on when accepting Division invitations.
  • The battle mode is now correctly displayed on the Battle Results screen. Previously, it always showed Domination.
  • The "Up" command no longer sticks in the menu after a battle is over.

Kang Daniel Appreciation post (Write-up)

I'm back with another write-up! This one might not be as long as the others because I'm kind of more of a casual fan of Kang Daniel, but I wanted to write this because I rarely see him getting talked about or mentioned (plus people keep associating him as only Jihyo's ex) which I think is unfair because even as a casual fan, he is someone I respect a LOT and he has lots of amazing qualities about him that should be appreciated more. I'm really sorry if a lot of this info is surface-level as I'm a casual fan but I'll try to research as much as possible and hopefully do him justice. Also DANITYs feel free to comment anything I missed/got wrong!

WHO IS KANG DANIEL?

Kang Daniel is well-known for winning 1st place on Produce 101 S2, being the center of Wanna One and now as an established soloist. Since his debut as a soloist, he has released 3 successful EPs with Color On Me, Cyan and Magenta. He also established his own company in 2019 and is now the CEO of Konnect Entertainment which handles all his activities in the entertainment industry. He will be making a comeback sometime this month with Paranoia. (Semi-related but do yourself a favor and check out Waves, his collab with Jamie and Simon Dominic. It's legit one of my favourite collabs ever)

WHY YOU SHOULD STAN

TALENT
VISUALS
OVERCAME LM ENTERTAINMENT's BS
Kang Daniel was in a legal dispute with LM Entertainment over contract negotiations and it was messy af due to LM and their bullshittery throughout the whole process which ended in contract termination. A full timeline of events can be found here which y'all should read if you wanna see the full extent of LM's bullshit but TL;DR :
God bless him for coming out of that whole mess not only fine, but successful af. To quote the iconic lyrics of Formation by Beyoncé "you know you that bitch when you cause all this conversation, always stay gracious best revenge is your paper"

PERSONALITY

HUMBLE/POLITE
I can't understate this enough since this was one of the main reasons I became a fan of his but every time I see him he comes across as very down-to-earth and humble, even though he's one of the biggest KPOP idols ever. From what I've seen people who have worked with him have nothing but praises for the guy and a bunch of celebrities are fans of him.
"Daniel has a very pure soul. When my recent drama ended, he was the first person to send me a message and congratulate me. He said in the message, “Thank you for your hard work hyung”. I think he is a dongsaeng that makes me feel very comfortable. I like him." - Lee Yi Kyung
"Kang Daniel is very pure, just as he seems on TV. He definitely gives people a boost of energy." - Loco
"He’s like a 12 year old boy. If he’s sleepy, he’d ask “May I sleep a little?” and he’d play games behind the stairs when it was break time. It’s surprising to see Daniel had this innocence about him and shows his real self, without putting on any airs." - Lee Yoon Hwa
"Because we heard about his popularity, we had quite a bit of prejudice against him. But after meeting him I realised how kind, bright and humble he is. He said that he feels lucky to have so much popularity after having only trained for two years. He’s so grateful for his popularity and has good manners, he is someone who will make it even further in the future." - Jung Chul Min
KIND/CHARITABLE
  1. He posted a video on Wanna One's instagram account of him doing the ALS ice bucket challenge and donating 2 million won through the Seungil Hope Foundation which caused a bunch of his fans to donate and and spread awareness which caused their website to crash. Jinusean's Sean who is a director later made a positive post regarding this on instagram thanking Kang Daniel and his fans for their support. His Daum fancafe DeumDaniel even matched his donation, donating 2 million won themselves.
  2. Sometimes it's Kang Daniel who matches the charity of his fans! When South Korea announced a national emergency regarding on of the largest wildfires affecting Gangwon province, over 4000 of his Korean fans were able to donate as much as 150 million won to Hope Bridge Disaster Relief. Kang Daniel responded by making a 30 million won donation himself.
  3. He donated 30 million won in DANITY’s name to The Snail of Love, a social welfare group for the deaf and hard of hearing. Within a week, his fans donated over 95 million won in his or DANITYs name after his donation. The Snail of Love chairman reported that Kang Daniel had personally visited their offices to see the first 10 children who will receive a cochlear implant due to his and DANITYs donations. The organization also held a ceremony for Kang Daniel and DANITYs to thank them for their combined donations.

RANDOM CLIPS/INFO

FINAL THOUGHTS

I didn't watch Produce 101 S2 when it first aired, I just knew that afterwards there was a breakout star named Kang Daniel and I saw him everywhere. I'm going to be 100% honest, when he first debuted with Wanna One, then as a soloist I didn't know much about him or W1 and I didn't understand the appeal. Afterwards, I watched Produce and a few of his appearances on variety shows. Now I totally see why he's one of the biggest idols ever. People can say what they'd like about his skill or whatever, but it's hard to deny how easy-to-like he is. Now that I'm a fan, I get sad when people only know him as Jihyo's ex, or they say things like he doesn't deserve his fame just because he isn't the best singer out there. Whenever I see him whether it's on Produce, or in Wanna One or now as a soloist he just always comes across as a caring, humble person + he has a kid-like quality to him that is super endearing.
Also while doing the research for this post, can I just say I'm genuinely impressed by DANITYs? Most of the people I interact with are multis, so color me surprised when I look into DANITYs and most of them are dedicated stans of Kang Daniel only. They mostly mind their own business and interact with each other exclusively. As a casual/multi fan, that was pretty cool to see in it's own way. Not to mention DANITYs countless acts of charity inspired by Kang Daniel's own acts of charity. Through the process of making this post I have a new found appreciation of both Kang Daniel and DANITYs. If there are any DANITYs reading this, y'all are great and I am in awe of y'all. I hope you liked this post!

[FINDS] My 2020 Taobao purchases AKA coping in 2020 part 1

Disclosure: I didn't receive any kind of discount for this. I am out of random quarantine hobbies to distract me from the world and need to fill the void of having someone compliment my outfit and being able to respond with, “Thanks, it was $5 at the thrift store”

My mood board~

I found /RepLadies at the beginning of lockdown. I was furloughed and fortunate enough to spend this time at home. My phone screen time went from 2 hours a day to 6. Thanks, Taobao. I exhausted every random hobby my ADHD ass could find, from stick n poke tattoos to playing music for my plants (that were already tired of me annoying them pre-pandemic) to vegan cooking to making bongs etc etc etc. I lost HELLA weight and started lifting around this time and was tired of looking like a weight loss commercial with my pants 10 inches from my belly, so I purged my closet and FINALLY had an excuse to shop my ass off after lurkin repladies forever

For reference: I'm 5'2", 115\~ lbs and am all legs no torso. My style has never stayed in one lane, leaning toward goth hypebeast kingdom hearts character to bell bottoms, afghan coats and Farrah Fawcet hair. Here's me trying to streamline that and find basic versatile pieces that are cozy/not black like the rest of my closet/I can build a lot of fits around/can transition from being outside to straight to bed. Also sorry about the scary door everything's hanging on, my house is 200 years old and if I put another layer of paint on these mfs i'm positive the whole place will come down

Majority of these were bought through Sugargoo. Some from Superbuy, from whom I'm still waiting on a pretty big birthday haul ordered back in November :'( Maybe they'll arrive in time for part two.

Anyways, here are some budget finds~~~

The good:

Not sure if dupes of anything but still good:

Meh

LOL

Anyways! Thanks for sticking around. When I have some time off from work next week I will start on part 2.

Hello, I’ve been Banned from a sub and the Mod thinks all I want is to argue.

Hi,
Pretty upset. So if come off in a weird way than I apologize.
I’m just looking for conflict resolution because I’ve been banned from a Reddit recently (first ban, literally a day or two in the Reddit) for a comment that may have been taking out of context.
They didn’t give me a chance to explain myself before banning. Tried to message to make sense of the thing and they equated me to an internet troll of sorts.
All I’m asking, genuinely is a way to deal with this, as I think it’s unfair to be seen as XYZ and be banned with no way to even argue my case. I didn’t post the name of the sub or the mod in question because This post is more of an inquiry if anything else.
Thanks in advance.
Edit:
So in the sub Reddit ********** the was a picture posted with the quote
“Sometimes you don’t actually know how traumatic something is until you talk about it like it’s some random anecdote, until you realize the table’s silent and all your friends are at you like what the fuck.
I commented on cause I related to that after going through a break up with my girl (not really relevant but I’m giving context)
I said
“Very hard to come to this conclusion as. Emotional abuse from a woman is just as bad.”
Something I didn’t say with intent. It flatly just that, I was abused by a woman. As a man I found it hard to really figure that, mostly because I felt prime my whole life to be a rock for women. So with this pragmatism I saw my abuse as more of an obstacle that men just deal with for their girl. It wasn’t necessarily an attack on all woman but that SPECIFICALLY my situation was just that.
A redditor said something in the lines of (I apologize because the comment was deleted to my surprise, by the moderator.)
“So sorry that happen, I believe there are abusers on both sides.”
Which kinda bothered me ngl because I wasn’t trying to pick sides with that comment. Men and women get abused. I was a man who was abused by a woman. I’m sure there are loads of men on some relationship subs talk about the same thing. I know this cause I follow some of them. Didn’t respond to it because I figure it was just a one off and what she said wasn’t that troubling any ways. Just gave a weird vibe is all.
Another Redditor commented the same thing but with a twist that I was trying to make this about women (another comment that was deleted.)
“Both men and when get abused, why did you feel the need to make it about gender?”
I said
“Because I am a man. When being abused by a woman, it’s hard to come to terms with it as the typical scenario is a small woman being abused by a large man.”
By this point I was annoyed y the line of questioning cause It was really just “mood” comment. Like I “yeah, I’ve been there. It sucks.” Didn’t feel like having an argument so I said.
“It also doesn’t help when I try to bring attention to that fact in comment the first thing two redditors try to do explain it doesn’t matter or the cliche answe. ‘Abuse is Abuse” or “I don’t condone abuse on either side.’”
I’m just like I don’t understand why this something to complain about? If gender doesn’t matter why am I being called out to being specific about something personal I went through on a public forum that talks about their abusive relationships?
One guy agreed with me and I got a couple of upvotes on both comments. And the mod deleted the others comments and perma banned me.
I’m confused like uh, wdf? The mods note to me was this:
“Toxic masculinity is the idea that it’s ‘hard to come to terms’ with abuse because it’s a woman dining it. News flash, it does not matter what is between your legs, being a victim is hard to comes to terms with. You don’t get to be hurt hurt because someone else experience is not what you want it to be.”
I’m honestly floored tbh. Like when was I hurt hurt? When did I say in my first come that it MATTER what was between you legs? What was with the condescending tone. Like was I talking to a mod or like what?
It didn’t seem helpful or even constructive, I wasn’t trying to gaslight anyone or anything so I just asked:
“Can you explain to me why I was banned?”
They responded.
“Cause you want to argue who has it worse, men or women. Abuse is abuse, it doesn’t matter who is doing it or who is being abused, what matters is getting out and healing. Your personal pain is most important to you, but should not be used to invalidate the pain other feels. I cannot allow you to tell others they didn’t have it that bad because they didn’t experience x thing like you did. No one should have the defend their right to what they feel. Have your debates elsewhere.”
A message that was ironic to me and just mind boggling as they could have extracted a debate out of two comments. Like I was the one who told someone that they were wrong. Like I was so confused. So I asked:
“Can you show me when I said anything like that? Because if I’m remembering the post and the comments that were made it seemed like that was being done to me.”
I was genuinely confused at thought that was a mistake was made. I’m just trying to figure out what’s going on. At least like link to something, explain my side and the context. Like even if I was wrong at least like give me the benefit of the doubt and explain it to me.
They respond:
“Plus you bring up gender where no one was talking about it in the first place . That tells me you should look at your way of thinking and ask why you want to start a debate on sexism on a gender neutral thread”
I also see that you like to throw around terms like “white knighting” and “cucked” without any understanding of what those words even mean. I will ban people for unironic use incel dog whistle because it’s obvious you fell into some toxic circlejerk because you were hurt and angry. Break free of that and I will be happy to urban you in the future.”
I was at lost for words. I’m completely confused like what was even happening. I haven’t said anything like that one the sub. I LITERALLY joined like two days ago and that was my first comment!
I respond with:
“I ask you to provide an evidence of that. Cause as far as it sounds right now, you are taking whatever I said out of context and using it against me without any way to defend myself. You’re talking about toxicity yet you are creating your own narrative and just going to town.
It really isn’t an issue of being unbanned, since I can make a new TRA whenever I want. It’s about your integrity as a mod if you can ban people Willy nilly with out any fair understanding of what was said to require said banning.”
I’m just trying to reach a resolution and I’m getting upset since it feels like I’m just being strung along. I think they may have looked at my history or whatever to maybe bring up random comments that would also be taking out of context idk. They would explain anything. I also say:
“So you misunderstand my comments. Ban me. Make fun of me based off of comments made on other pots in other subreddits. Gaslight me. Then ignore my calls for proof of claims you made. Nice to know Reddit Mods in **** the great and understanding folk you’d think they are.
Even went as far to look at my three only comments in that sun to see that they are still getting upvoted yet the comments I responded to were deleted. Amazing. It’s like you made that call completely on your own with no regard for understanding or anything like that.”
A whole passes and another mod answers my message:
“I believe the kid who banned you will get back to you when they’re able. Unfortunately it’s not always possible to return users’ messages as son as we’d like. Thank you for understanding.”
I respond:
“I would be a hell of a lot more understanding of their situation had they not taken my comment out of context. Banned me with no room for recourse and attempted to “read me” as if I was sort of toxic individual in these messages and ignore my calls for evidence as to why I was banned from a forum I assumed was meant for people who have been in a abusive relationship.
Not to be rude to you, but is this how mods operate with users. Because it seems a tab bit unfair. I understand you are not customer service but these sorts of moves feels very scorched earth.”
I got the “We didn’t like what you said, we don’t care what you meant. No you can’t defend yourself, eat shit go fuck yourself” vibe from them.
The second mod says :
I am not the mod who banned you nor was I involved in the decision, and I don’t know the context of what’s going on.
But I think it’s important to recognize that mid teams consist of individual users who are not monoliths. Many of us mod for subs about abuse because we have very personal experience with the topic and many of us are victim/survivors ourselves. I understand that the same can’t be said for other subs, but generally mods for abuse subs are doing this because they genuinely care and want to help others. Mods in these subs are volunteering their time, and even if you disagree with a decision that was made or how it was handled, I do think it’s important to remember that it is lot of work to try to moderate a community in a way that is safe for everyone - and that mods for these subs genuinely have the best intentions.
Again, I can’t speak to your individual situation, and I am not asking you to agree with the decision; I just don’t think that users always recognize the sheer amount of time & labor - and sometimes personal energy - that is devoted to moderating abuse subs. And I do understand that there are many complicated feelings when you are a victim/survivor using this sub and you disagree with a modding decision. Modding and using this sub are both very personal for many people and it can hard emotionally.
Which I saw as “ we are entitled to our own emotional feelings and we have a will to enforce that onto any user and if you have a problem than I’m sorry, I guess?”
I say:
“While I can understand that you guys are people with with your own lives and so on and so forth... and have the right to “govern” subs, the emotional dissonance that comes from being what I saw as a support group for people with experiences in abusive relationships to then berating me in the inbox as a meditating third party to be ridiculous.
Like I said this is not directed at you personally. I have asked this user continuously for EVIDENCE so that I may plead my case and they continued to act as if I deserved no such luxury.
I feel this to be unfair. To then go dark without explanation when they could have used the time spent to berate me to actually be understanding, just mind boggling.
Whether you are paid or volunteering the one thing I expect when they could have used the time spent berate me to actually be understanding, just mind boggling.
Whether you are paid or volunteering the one thing I expect when I message you as opposed to messaging a random user is a level of meditation to a solution. Rather then de escalation they could have used terms that were made in the comments that I posted.
There wasn’t a warning or an talk about context. It fingers pointed and a ban. While I cannot expect anything from you personally I find it very frustrating that while I open to discussion they were not.
I will wait for them to respond, if they continue to be the way they are I guess I’m just banned. It takes little energy to fair and decided to make me out to be a facelesss toxic individual on the internet. I hope that all mods on this Reddit are not like that, but if that is the case than it is a far cry from I expected when followed.
When a moderator gaslights you on forum called ***** it stands to reason that there is bigger problem that not being able to respond on time.
Thank you for time. Have a nice day.”
The first mod comes back and says:
“This is u/******* I was the one that banned you, I have not sent you a single message other than mod mail and frankly at this point I have zero intention of taking this any further. You can stay banned because it’s very clear you only want an argument. Normally I would be happy to oblige but I have a busy weekend so I don’t have time to play with concern trolls.
You replied to a gender neutral post https://www.reddit.c
With
‘Very hard to come to this conclusion as a man. Emotional abuse from a woman is just as bad.’ When there was literally zero gender mentioned. So right away YOU started the bullshit.
Ps using another account is ban evasion and can get you up banned, so have fun with that.”
After that I was temp muted for 3 days.
So yeah. Not sure how or why that happened the way it did but I’m looking for opinions or like help or whatever. Cause I admit I’m confused and new to mod relations. Is this how it’s supposed to go? Am I missing something?
I’ll put this in the edit for people to see.

Lockdown, things to do, help & advice.

Disclaimer I am posting this here because I got a message from the mods asking me to. I'm not from London so links aren't London centric (but hopefully still of help) and the main post is here so any updates will likely be there (I will try here but it's hard to keep up with the amount of suggestions)
Thanks.

_riotingpacifist wanted this links added, but I simply just don't have the time to vet and check all the suggestions here, so I will link as is:
Update:

Nifty Or Thrifty: Labyrinth Cup (Part I)

The "Nifty Or Thrifty" article series takes a comprehensive look at the meta for PvP Cup forma--wait, hold up. We're not calling it that this month. No, this month, we're going with a new, more appropriate name: "Mono Or YOLO"! Why? Well, because this month's Cup demands a... different sort of analysis.
Welcome to Labyrinth Cup.
Obviously going through the standard 10k/50k/75k/100k second move unlock options would be... well, massive. Aside from the 16 specific bans, you can run... well, ANYTHING really. The one big caveat is that there is no doubling up on any typing, so running something like, say, Wigglytuff would mean you cannot have anything else on your team that is at least part Fairy OR Normal type, as Wiggly has those two typings. You certainly CAN build a team stuffed with dual-type Pokémon, but obviously if you can find some solid mono-types, it makes teambuilding MUCH easier.
Hence the name change, specifically "YOLO" (You Only Live Once): it may be very tempting to pick certain dual-types, but you have to think through the consequences of each of those choices, of what you now CAN'T add to your team later. Assembling a team for this meta will require some forethought and planning.
And so, as I go through the below Pokémon (and yes, I will still try to work through in order from "thriftiest" to most expensive), I will be putting extra emphasis on mono-types, and for the dual-types especially, I will also list the consequences--the YOLO--of what having that 'mon on your team means... what you now canNOT also have on the same team.
But anyway, I've rambled on enough on intro and setup, and you know I always butt up against the character limit 😅, and this time I'm butting right up against the start of the month too! 😱 So let's get a move on. Here we go!

10,000 Dust/25 Candy

VENUSAUR
Vine Whip | Frenzy Plantᴸ & Sludge Bomb
The inside joke continues! I may have changed the format and even title of Nifty Or Thrifty this month, but we're still kicking it off with Venusaur, as (nearly) always. Some traditions and protocol just have to be continued. Anyway, Venu is arguably the best Grass in the meta without a gimmick (AKA Icey Aboma and Flying Trop). It doesn't do anything new or fancy, it just goes out and does its job, tearing through the many relevant Water and Ground types, with the added benefit of being one of the more consistent and reliable ways to eliminate Charmers AND (nearly) all the Fighters you care about too. Venusaur is solid as ever, and its Poison subtyping perhaps has even a little more going for it than normal.
YOLO: Abomasnow, Tropius, Razor Leafers, Chesnaught, Toxicroak, Beedrill, Haunter
MONO TYPE ALTS: MEGANIUM is the first one that will come to mind for most folks, as a fellow Frenzy Plant user and no secondary typing. It maintains Venusaur's record against everything but Dewgong, the Fighters, and the Charmers (it BARELY beats Clefable but loses the other big ones), though somewhat makes up for it by beating Registeel and Melmetal (Venu normally cannot) thanks to Earthquake. There is also CHERRIM, who also matches Venusaur aside from the Charmers, Sableye, and disappointingly, sometimes even Whiscash (who can outrace it to a killer Blizzard). However, Cherrim can outrace the Fighters (Goon and Vigoroth in particular) and Dewgong, unlike Meganium, and like Meganium can also take out Regi and Mel thanks to Weather Ball (Fire). Not the last time you'll see Weather Ball making a dent in this meta! Also worth noting: conveniently, both Meg and Cherrim have the same cheap 10,000 dust second move unlock as Venusaur, so easy to build from scratch if you need to... and Cherrim also looks VERY good in the recently revealed GBL Love Cup, so this could be the perfect time build one if you haven't already. You could also look at Tangrowth and/or Sceptile, but they're not particularly special in this meta.
BEEDRILL
Poison Jab | X-ScissoFell Stinger & Drill Runᴸ
Beedrill is, in many ways, the inverse of Venusaur. They share the anti-Fighter and anti-Charm roles, though Beedrill does it a little bit better overall, but then Bee goes out and beats Venusaur and its Grassy friends, is better versus other Bugs (looking at you, Galv), and thanks to Drill Run, can turn the tables on things like Registeel and Sunny Castform that Venusaur can only dream of. But it's not as overall powerful as Venusaur, as you can see by the well-under-50% win record. And with both being Poison types, you cannot run them together.
YOLO: Venusaur, Victreebel, Toxicroak, Haunter, Galvantula, Escavalier, Heracross, Forretress
MONO TYPE ALTS: There really aren't any that are not just worse dual-types. Nothing else can truly replicate the variety of wins Beedrill achieves with its unique suite of moves. There ARE a couple of other relevant Bugs we'll look at later, but they also have multiple typings. However, there is ONE mono-type Bug I might consider....
SHADOW PINSIR
Fury Cutter | X-Scissor & Close Combat
Breaking the normal thriftiness order of the article already, but this one is worth mentioning before we move on, as it really does seem to be the ONLY pure Bug that may have something going for it in Labyrinth. Regular Pinsir doesn't have the horsepower, but Shadow Pinsir may have the sauce in this meta. It's quite a different beast than Beedrill, doing nothing against the Charmers and failing against Registeel, Toxicroak, and Galvantula due to no Ground moves, but using its Close Combat to instead beat Lapras, Dewgong, Diggersby, Snorlax, Melmetal (Bee's Drill Run is too slow for THAT one), Sableye, and even Stunfisk, all while continuing to shred through (most) Grasses and Fighters as Beedrill can. This is no thrifty pick, but it IS pretty interesting.
WIGGLYTUFF
Charm | Ice Beam & Play Rough
Yes, Wigglytuff remains easily one of the best Charmers (really behind only one other which we'll get to later on), being the fastest and most reliable of the bunch to beat things like Drifblim, Snorlax, Sableye, and Jellicent... you know, things that rely on Ghost damage that Wigglytuff's Normal typing blunts. But as you'll see in a second, that Normal typing comes with its own big downsides, because...
...YOLO: Vigoroth, Obstagoon, Diggersby, other Charmers, Powder Snow A-Ninetales
MONO TYPE ALTS: The easy out here is CLEFABLE, with its pure Fairy typing and thus no need to eliminate the good Normal types out there from your team build if you want 'em. The problem is that Clefable is just a worse Wigglytuff, winning nothing that Wiggly does not and losing to Abomasnow, Whiscash, Stunfisk, and Jellicent. If you're considering Clefable, it's really just so that you can use other Normal types alongside it. If you want a non-Wiggly Charmer, your solid alternative lies further down in the article, as I'm trying to stay MOSTLY on track with 10,000 unlock 'mons for now as much as possible.
There's also WHIMSICOTT, which is very much NOT mono-type but is a cheap Charmer alternative. Unfortunately its second typing of Grass does more harm than good here, making it particularly susceptible to Fire, Flying, and Ice, which outweigh the good that comes with resisting Grass and Electric damage. It does well enough that the right team may be able to make good use of it, and you'll probably see it here and there, but generally it lags a bit behind other Charm options, and also then occupies the only Grass slot on its team, which could be tricky to work around.
WHISCASH
Mud Shot | Mud Bomb & Blizzard
No Swampert, so here's your best true Mud Boy (we'll look a potent "honorary" Mud Boy later). Not a lot of surprises left with Whiscash in PvP anymore... still hates Grass, not a big fan of Ice, and can get outraced by spammy Obstagoon, Vigoroth, Rainy (and Snowy) Castform, and even Galvantula, and struggles against Charmers, typically losing those as well. And while Blizzard is obviously a huge answer to many things, Skarmory and Mandibuzz can each tank one and still get the win too. But most everything else is in for a hard fight, especially the many Steels, Fires, Poisons, and even most Ghosts that occupy the core meta, among others. Huh... maybe there WAS more to talk about than I thought!
YOLO: Politoed, Jellicent, Dewgong, Lapras, Pelipper, Mantine, Lanturn, Diggersby, Stunfisk... perhaps Whiscash's biggest downside is a LONG list of things you cannot run alongside it.
MONO TYPE ALTS: I mean, if you REALLY want to dig deep, there's always Shadow Dugtrio. 😂 Hey, it's not a BAD list of wins, just short. There are of course other Mud Boy alternatives (Quagsire, Gastrodon, even Marshtomp), but they're really no better than Whiscash and often worse... and of course, not mono typed. Your only real mono-type alterative is one that does not belong among the 10k mons, but definitely DOES belong at this point in the article as a direct and arguably better alternative to Whiscash....
POLITOED
Mud Shot | Weather Ball (Water) & Earthquakeᴸ/Blizzard
Not the first time I've pushed for Politoed... I stuck my neck out pretty far for it back in Marsh Cup and some folks laughed at my statement that it could be the best "Mud Boy" in that format due to the fact that " it outright resists Ice and Water damage and doesn’t die quite as alarming fast to Grass damage", as I said at the time. And all of that is still true, and there is far less Electric to worry about in Labyrinth Cup, so... who's laughing now? Toed has 3 more wins overall (a jump of 10% in the win rate) than Cash, and though it's not strictly better--between the two, Whiscash uniquely beats Zweilous, Toxicroak, Sableye, Clefable, and Drifblim, some of those thanks to Blizzard--but Politoed beats numerous things Whiscash can't, like Obstagoon, Vigoroth, Shadow Gardevoir, Jellicent, Alolan Ninetales, Lapras, Dewgong, and Whiscash itself, all but the first three of those due to its resistances to Water and Ice. If you want to REALLY emulate Whiscash (or just can't get Legacy Earthquake), you can run it instead with Blizzard and STILL it performs right on par with Whiscash, with Cash uniquely beating Lanturn and then Croak, Sable, and Zweil as before, but Politoed otherwise matching it blow for blow and getting its own unique wins versus Lapras, Mandibuzz, Whiscash itself, and even Tropius! If you want to use a Mud Boy but don't want to be saddled with eliminating other Ground types, or even if you just want arguably a better-in-this-meta Whiscash, consider taking Mr. Toed's wild ride!
BLAZIKEN
Counter | Blaze Kick & Blast Burnᴸ/Stone Edgeᴸ/Brave Bird
The first Fighter on our list, and the first Fire as well, so let's take a brief moment talking about why each of those types are good here. You may have already gathered from sims above that there are a goodly number of things that burn (Grass, Steel, Ice, Bug) and many that don't want to come across a Counter user (Steels and Ices again, and Darks and Normals). But all that onto a half-Fire body like Blaziken and suddenly you have a potential counter to other Fires too. And thus, we end up with this. As expected, the win column is filled with Grasses, Ices, Bugs, Steels, Darks, Normals, and yes, other prominent Fire types. And the really crazy thing is that the same list shows up if Blaze is running Stone Edge or Brave Bird instead of the Blast Burn shown there; the only difference is that BB can beat Stunfisk, which is a surprising and potentially important result that gives the all-Fire charge move set a very slight advantage. Haven't seen a lot of chatter on Blaze, but perhaps we should be!
YOLO: Toxicroak, Hitmonchan, Hitmontop, Chesnaught, Machoke (note that Obstagoon and Vigoroth COULD still be used, however!), Alolan Marowak, Ninetales, Sunny Castform, Charizard
MONO TYPE ALTS: On the Fire side, your best bet is probably TYPHLOSION. While quite effective now with Incinerate, it's not quite as versatile, though you can run it with Shadow Claw to mix things up a bit, giving up stuff like Croak, Goon, Sable, Snorlax, and Stunfisk to instead gain Ninetales, A-Wak, Dewgong, and Shadow Gardevoir. On the Fighting side... well, let's break a pair of those down a little more.
HITMONCHAN
Counter | Ice Punch & Close Combat/Thunder Punch
Hey, it still mostly works in the thrifty section, as you can second move a Tyrogue for only 10k dust and then evolve it up and save yourself 65,000 stardust thanks to the Baby Discount™. And what you get for your efforts is basically a legal Medicham. Not quite as good,of course... Medi can take down stuff like Vigoroth, Galvantula, Sunny Castform, and both Ninetales that Jackie Chan cannot, though there are always tradeoffs, and Chan manages to beat Skarmory and Mandibuzz that overcome Medicham. So while it's not quite the same, Hitmonchan more than holds its own and represents the Ice Punch fight club well. And while MUCH more expensive due to no Tyrogue option, Shadow Hitmonchan (with double Elemental Punches) is a different but still very effective flavor, and while it usually gives up Lanturn and Skarmory to get there, it can bring in new wins against things like Castform, Tropius, and bane-of-Medicham Sableye. Everyone seems to always forget Hitmonchan, but especially in formats like this where so many Fighters ahead of it are banned, make sure that YOU don't. While I've made my own recommendations here on moves, Hitmonchan is very flexible and can fill many holes on various teams depending on what moves fit YOUR team composition best.
HITMONTOP
Counter | Stone Edge & Close Combat
It seems to get more press than Hitmon "Jackie" Chan, and yes, Top is just fine, though I still value Chan and its unpredictable versatility a bit more personally. What it lacks in variety of moves, Top makes up in pure power with Stone Edge, allowing it to get away with a sneaky win over Ninetales, and its sheer bulk (even higher than Chan) allows it to outpunch Vigoroth... with just Counter. But on the flipside, Top falls short against things Chan can beat, like the Castforms, Venusaur, Tropius, and more disappointingly, Lapras and Diggersby, which are usually surefire wins for Fighters. (In fairness, Top CAN beat those last two, but just barely and only with the right bobbing and weaving that a smart opponent can wiggle out of depending on how they shield.) I DO like Top, and this is a format where it can shine a bit. I just like Chan more, that's all. Personal preference, perhaps. Either way, the Hitmons should be out in force for once.
OBSTAGOON
Counter | Night Slash & Gunk Shot
One of the best Fighters that... isn't. Obstagoon does have two typings, but neither are actually Fighting. Instead, as a Dark/Normal, it has to avoid anything else that IS Fighting, as it is double weak to Fighting damage. But its handy resistances (Dark, 2x to Psychic, and 3x to Ghost) combine with its high Fighting and Dark damage output to make it a great option overall, and one of the cheapest to build too! Darks, Ices, Ghosts, Normals, Fires, even most Waters all end up in Goon's wake. It should be prevelant in this meta.
YOLO: Mandibuzz, Zweilous, Sableye, Alolan Muk, Wigglytuff, Diggersby, Vigoroth, Lickitung, Snorlax
MONO TYPE ALTS: Well there's Vigoroth, of course, but we'll get to him later. Beyond that... there's really no mono-type that fills Goon's shoes beyond the Fighters we've already mentioned. With Scrafty nowhere in sight, Obstagoon stands basically alone.
I will go ahead and mention LUCARIO here too, but it remains very boom or bust with that Steel sub-typing, and bait dependant too! Yes, it certainly helps it dominate matchups versus Ice types and other Steels, but there are very few Psychics or Dragons around for Luc to resist, and a worrying number of Fires and Fighters and other things that get around its steely exterior to prey on its frailty. When it works, Luc can still work well here... but when it fails, and it looks like it could more often than not in this meta, it fails spectacularly. Not to mention the many other Fighters and Steels that you can't use with Luc on your team. Baby Discount™ or not, I personally don't think Lucario is worth it here and would look elsewhere for my source of Fighting damage.
CHARIZARD
Fire Spin/Dragon Breathᴸ/Wing Attackᴸ | Dragon Claw & Blast Burnᴸ
Yes, Zard is still a very solid Fire type, and is particularly effective against Fighters (and quasi-Fighters) and brutal versus Grasses thanks to its Flying secondary typing, and along with Blaziken and its Counter, makes it a rare Fire that is able to overcome Diggersby too. And yes, while Flying opens up new risks, it does still beat some of the more worrisome things like Galvantula, Drifblim, and Alolan Ninetales despite their unresisted (or even super effective) moves that don't bother landlocked Fire types as much. And you have options, with Dragon Breath variants losing Galv, Blim, A-Tails, and Aboma to instead beat Mandibuzz, Alolan Marowak, Zweilous, and Kanto Ninetales, or Wing Attack that beats both Ninetales and Aboma, but loses the unique DB wins, as well as Galv and Blim. And while I won't go into all the sims now, Shadow Zard is certainly viable too, though I'd recommend just sticking with Fire Spin there, as the other variants fall down a bit as Shadows.
YOLO: Alolan Marowak, Ninetales, Sunny Castform, Blaziken, Skarmory, Mandibuzz, Mantine, Tropius, Drifblim, Pelipper and more.
MONO TYPE ALTS: As mentioned after Blaziken, your best bet is probably Typhlosion. Not much else behind that, honestly.
ALOLAN ROCKS
Volt Switch | Rock Blast & Stone Edge
While we're here in cheap Electric types, may as well mention the suddenly popular (FINALLY folks are paying attention!) Alolan Rocks. A-Graveler is ever so slightly better than A-Golem, holding on to beat the major Charmers and Zweilous, while A-Golem instead uses its higher Attack to outrace Jellicent, Venusaur, and (Spark) Lanturn. Either way, the Alolan Rocks are equally capable of busting up Ices, Flyers, Fires, and Bugs, among others, but are deathly afraid of Grasses and Grounds (much moreso than other Electric types), and HAVE to avoid Fighters. Those weaknesses are all pretty prominently featured in this meta, which may hold them back more than the simple numbers and sims show.
YOLO: Various other Electrics I've already mentioned a few times, plus Probopass, Regirock, Cradily, Crustle, and uh... Magcargo, I guess?
MONO TYPE ALTS: Not much on the Rock side, at least among the thriftiest options. On the Electric side... well, most of the really good Electrics have SOME secondary typing. I guess there's ZEBSTRIKA with its ability to burn stuff with Flame Charge, but it's iffy and kinda niche. However, there is one big one that's being criminally overlooked (as it often is) and merits its own little writeup... right now!
RAICHU
Volt Switch/Thunder Shock | Brick Break & Wild Charge/Thunder
No no... not the Alolan one. AhChu has a middling win percentage, but KayChu looks like a potential star and isn't saddled with a secondary typing weak to Darks and Ghosts like AhChu, or Fire and Rock like Galvantula. More than the typing, the big difference is humble--one could even say underwhelming--Brick Break. As I've mentioned numerous times in past Raichu articles and snippits, even though BB is a very mediocre move, its Fighting typing combined with the spam potential of Raichu's fast moves means it can do truly silly stuff like beat the mighty Bastiodon. Of course, Bastie is banned here, but my point is that BB + spam = unique potential for an Electric type, like being one of VERY few that can take out Obstagoon. (In fact, only Raichu and Galv and two other Electric types can reliably do it.) You have options too... obviously Wild Charge is the preferred closing move, but you do have the option of Thunder which shares nearly all the same wins (Vigoroth is the only core meta loss that shows up) and obviously does not self-nerf. But the homerun potential of Wild Charge--especially with high stat product IVs, is probably the way to go... go big or go home, right? And Raichu could go QUITE big here, able to get wins even Galvantula can't, like Lanturn, Ninetales, Sunny Castform, Snorlax, and Tropius... and with those H.S.P. IVs I just linked to, Clefable, Wigglytuff, and Alolan Marowak are within reach too! It's an impressive jump in performance (as opposed to Galv which gains just one notable win--Tropius--with max IVs) that practically demands you check your Pokémon storage for a good IV Chu. In my opinion, it's one of the best mono-types--best Pokémon overall, even!--to consider in the entire format.
MAGCARGO
Rock Throw/Ember | Stone Edge & Overheat
Since we were just talking unusual Rock types, it is time once again (in a nod to the original Bernie meme) to stump for my boy Magcargo. Many of you probably know by now that when it's even close to relevance, out I come with it, and it does some real good in Labyrinth. Mr. Cargo can take out a varied mix of stuff that includes Alolan Marowak (and the other Fires, to boot), Abomasnow and Tropius, Wigglytuff and Clefable and Shadow Gardevoir and Alolan Ninetales, Skarmory, Galvantula, Drifblim, Mandibuzz and more. Or trade in Rock Throw for the recently buffed Ember to gain Melmetal (at the cost of Mandi and A-Wak). I'm not saying it's a build-around piece, per se, but a valuable and flexible bench option, or even regular starter on a team with some of those as holes to fill? Don't just sit there unimpressed like Bernie with his little gloves. Give it a good, hard look.
YOLO: Alolan Marowak, Ninetales, Blaziken, Probopass, Regirock, Crustle, Sudowoodo, Alolan Rocks
MONO TYPE ALTS: The whole reason I keep dragging Magcargo into the light is because it's so unique. You can consider a number of other Fire and/or Rock types to do some of what Mags can do, but there isn't anything that can do the combination of what it does.
CRUSTLE
Smack Down | X-Scissor & Rock Slide
Yep, another cheap dual-type Rock Pokémon. Crustie actually comes out looking pretty similar to Magcargo, but with some key differences. No resistance to Fairy here, so unlike Mags, Crustie loses to all the Charmers. It also takes neutral from Flying damage due to its Bug typing, so between that and having no super effective moves against Steel, it also fails to beat Skarmory and Melmetal as well, and lack of resisting Ice means that while it still beats things like Abomasnow, it is incredibly close. Ironically, it DOES beat Dewgong (which Magcargo cannot consistently do... one Water Pulse and it's lights out for Mags), beats Mandibuzz and A-Wak closely but consistently, and gets wins Magcargo can only dream about versus Zweilous, Sableye, and even Obstagoon with its super effective Fighting damage, thanks to Crustle's Bug damage from X-Scissor. Not even the Alolan Rocks stand a chance versus Goon, but here we are. And here I thought, going in, that Rock wouldn't be a particularly good type in this meta!
YOLO: We've covered them already, but the highlights: Alolan Rocks, Magcargo, Regirock, and then Galv, Escav, Heracross, Forret, etc.
MONO TYPE ALTS: Not really. No other good Smack Down options here, and much of what does Bug stuff has already been covered. (AKA Pinsir.)
CHESNAUGHT
Vine Whip | Superpower & Energy Ball
It's not an eye-popping record overall, but having a solid enough Grass that can also beat the likes of Melmetal, Vigoroth, Obstagoon, Zweilous, Sableye, and Snorlax is pretty nice, no?
YOLO: Toxicroak, Hitmons, Machoke, Venusaur, Tropius, Abomasnow, Razor Leafers
MONO TYPE ALTS: Numerous Grasses and Fighters, all arguably better in those roles, but none that do both.
DIGGERSBY
Mud Shot/Quick Attack | Fire Punch & Earthquake
Our first real shot at Diggs in a Silph Cup, and while not strictly dominant, it brings the goods. A super bulky Ground that does all the things you'd ask of your Ground type (beating Fires, Steels, Electrics) plus outlasts the Charmers, Snorlax, Zweilous and others, and can strike back with fiery fury and take out Skarmory too. And if you can get your Diggersby over Level 40 (as early as Level 42!), you can even turn the tables on Toxicroak, a huge pickup. It's not a perfect comparison, of course, but Diggs may be as close as you can get to emulating Galarian Stunfisk in this Cup.
YOLO: The Ground side isn't too bad--stuff like Stunfisk, Whiscash, and maybe Gligar or the like--but Normal means no Vigoroth, Obstagoon, Wigglytuff, Snorlax, Lickitung... it's a decently impactful list.
MANTINE
Bubble/Wing Attack | Bubble Beam & Ice Beam
Unlike DIggersby, we have had many, MANY shots with Mantine by now... not many surprises left. And yet, you know you too continue to get suckered into shielding those Bubble Beams when you face down a Mantine. Come on, admit it... we've ALL done it. Somehow it seems harder to get it right against Mantine than anything else. Maybe it's the crippling fear of taking an Ice Beam to the face when we can least afford it, or Mantine's really good bulk that allows it to just throw so MANY charge moves, or maybe it's that dopey grin that lulls us into complacency. Whatever it is, Mantine just always manages to force its way into relevance, and that should be no different in this meta. At least we can reap the benefits of the Baby Discount™ in building one if we want in on the fun.
PIDGEOT
Gustᴸ | Aerial Ace & Hurricane/Brave Bird
The Normal half has unfortunate effects on the rest of your team, but if you just want a solid Flyer, Pidgeot gets it done. This is actually a pretty welcoming meta for a good Bird, and with wins over the Fighters (and quasi-Fighters), Pidgeot is better than most. In fact, it is the ONLY Normal Flyer that beats Vigoroth or Obstagoon, and if that isn't enough of a selling point, it conveniently also takes out the major Grasses, Fires, Ghosts, and things like Snorlax and Diggersby and Mandibuzz and the (non-Ice) Castforms too. It's an impressive body of work that many players will completely overlook. Don't be one of them.
YOLO: Again, the biggest downside here is all the Normals, but there are several prominent Flyers too, including Skarm, Mandi, Mantine, Trop, Drifblim, Pelipper... and the list goes on. Pidgeot is good but may require some crafty teambuilding to fit in.
And that is actually it for the 10,000 dual-type options that I heartily recommend. Some things that normally make these lists like Golbat, Noctowl, Empoleon, Gyarados just don't do enough for me to push for their use. However, there ARE a few more standouts to mention that are mono-type:
LINOONE
Shadow Claw | Grass Knot & Thunder
Getting another chance to spotlight its unique move package, Loonie continues to threaten major Flyers, Waters, and Ghosts, plus bonuses like Ninetales, Melmetal, and Stunfisk. Linoone is not (and likely will never be) the best option in any of those roles, but the fact that it can dabble effectively in all of them can make it a valued contributor on teams with a couple holes, especially in this meta where mono-types have their own increased value.
PRINPLUP
Bubble | Icy Wind & Hydro Pump
Empoleon may not be great here, but its pre-evolution has a nice list of wins, and not just the Fires and Diggersby and Alolan Ninetales and such you would expect, but things like Registeel and Whiscash and Skarmory and Drifblim Mandibuzz and both Vigoroth AND Obstagoon. If you're looking for spice and your Water slot is otherwise unoccupied, give the junior penguin a look.
BLASTOISE
Water Gun | Hydro Cannonᴸ & Ice Beam
Blastoise does nothing exciting or unexpected, really, but it DOES come in and does everything you'd want it to do. For the direct comparison to the Prinplup we just covered, while Blastie tends to fall short against A-Tails and Skarmory and Snorlax, it instead takes out Melmetal and Sableye and Stunfisk and major Charmers Wigglytuff and Clefable, just outbulking them all to hang on for the wins. In a meta where mono types are quite good, and there's no Azumarill to be found, Blastoise could be just what you're looking for. You could almost call Blastoise boring, but sometimes a little "boring" is all you need to complete your team.

50,000 Dust/50 Candy

As always, this is the most populous category, as there are tons of Pokémon with a 50,000 dust second move cost. And especially in a very open format like this, this section could easily fill an entire (and LONG) article by itself. I'm going to attempt to streamline it a little bit and talk just to the most promising and/or versatile options to consider, both dual and mono types. So just know going in that this may not be quite as comprehensive as normal, but your eyes will likely thank me for it when it's over. 🧐 That also means I will not highlight "YOLO" implications or mono type alternatives quite as much... I've covered most of that in the 10k section already, after all.
ALOLAN NINETALES
Charm/Powder Snow | Weather Ball (Ice) & Dazzling Gleam/Psyshock
I'll try to keep this simple and to the point: Alolan Ninetales is one of the very best Pokémon in the entire Labyrinth meta, AND in multiple different move configurations. It is an absolutely deadly Ice type now with Powder Snow spamming the new Weather Ball and then carrying to big stick of Dazzling Gleam to bring home wins versus stuff like Dewgong, Galvantula, and Sableye that resist Ice damage or just can't stand up to the big crushing blow of Gleam's 110+ STAB damage. In this configuration, you still beat all the Darks and most Fighters you would expect your Fairy to handle, PLUS the Grasses and Grounds and Fires you would expect your Ice to beat, plus the other Charmers themselves. Charm A-Tails (subbing in Psyshock over Gleam) is equally as effective, trading PS wins against Venusaur, Skarmory, Drifblim, and Vigoroth for Charm wins against Toxicroak, Lapras, Rainy Castform and Jellicent. Pay close attention to which fast move it's running before swapping in a good counter, but note that with Weather Ball now in its arsenal, the Charm variant in particular is much more dangerous now and both fast moves beat a very similar field of Pokémon.
TOXICROAK
Counter | Mud Bomb & Sludge Bomb
The "splurge" among Fighters in Labyrinth Cup. You can get nearly all the other viable ones much cheaper, and in some cases without even needing to actually BE a Fighting type at all. Toxicroak very much is a Fighter, and while in some metas that combined with its Poison subtyping has left it ready to be exploited by Psychic types (and Confusioners in particular), several of the bigger, scarier ones are banned. Other than the odd Jirachi or Bronzong here or there, Toxicroak's biggest downside is unlikely to be exploited at all! But surprisingly, it still looks a little mediocre. What gives? Well, while Psychic is Croak's primary nemesis, it also has to worry about Flyers and Ghosts and Fairies and other things that can just outspam it, and this meta has quite a few of those. So while, yes, Toxicroak preys upon Darks and Steels and Normals and even most Grasses and other Fighters, it has a lot to keep watch for over its own shoulder too. Use it, surely... Croak is still a nice build-around piece. But don't just drop your shoulders and relax in this Psychic-light environment. Croak still must be protected and deployed carefully... and with a backup plan.
HERACROSS
Counter | Close Combat & Megahorn
Seemingly always underrated, maybe this will finally be the meta where people pay attention to one of the better Fighters available? Yes, it has a secondary typing, but Bug is one of the easier ones to free up... most builds can consider just his Fighting typing and not miss not being able to run another Bug. And what that Bug side does for Heracross is make it Fighting-resistant just like Toxicroak is... and like Croak, Cross beats the other Fighters, including Toxicroak! The only meta things Toxicroak beats that Heracross cannot in 1v1 shielding are Sunny Castform and, ironically, Venusaur. (Though that latter one can be super close.) In contrast, Heracross can defeat FOUR things that Toxicroak normally does not: Stunfisk, Whiscash, Mandibuzz, and the aforementined head-to-head over Toxicroak. As I said: Heracross is underrated, folks.
Aaaaaaaand as per usual with Silph Arena NoTs, there is no way I am going to be able to keep this below Reddit's character limit. 😅 So let's take a break here and continue in Part II!
